The morning began quietly, disturbed only by the subtle vibration of my phone on the nightstand. As I gradually opened my eyes, the soft sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting gentle patterns across the room. It was already 7:00 AM—time had slipped away unnoticed. I reached out, unlocking my device to find a flood of notifications and messages from my friends. Without delay, I responded briefly, then carefully removed the charger from my phone before rising to my feet and heading downstairs.
As I closed my door, I caught the faint sound of something falling, accompanied by a soft groan. My heart rate quickened. Instinctively, I rushed toward Eun Gi's room and my mother's, but both were unoccupied. A wave of unease crept through me as I moved cautiously downstairs, scanning the living room. No signs of anyone there either. I circled the house, checking every corner, every room, but still found no one.
A troubling suspicion began to form—had someone broken into the house? Clutching the closest object I could find for protection, I ascended the stairs once more, contemplating my next move. A memory flickered—Eun Gi had mentioned that her son wouldn't be home until later this week. Given that, I reasoned the room might be unoccupied for the next few days.
Just as I reached for the doorknob, a tall figure suddenly appeared before me. My breath caught. The man didn't fit the typical profile of a burglar—his appearance was strikingly handsome, almost disarming. My initial instinct was to dismiss him, telling myself, "Don't let looks deceive you, George."
Nevertheless, he was undeniably attractive.
"Uh, yes?" he greeted, his voice smooth.
Startled, I reflexively swung the object I held, instinct driving me to defend myself.
"Ow! What's wrong with you?" he exclaimed, rubbing his arm.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" I demanded, voice trembling slightly.
He looked at me calmly. "I should be asking you the same thing."
I continued to hold my makeshift weapon, my mind racing. The situation felt surreal. Before I could process further, I heard footsteps approaching upstairs.
"What's going on here?" my mother's voice echoed from below, her tone edged with concern.
"Oh my god—Georgina?!" she gasped upon seeing the stranger.
I froze, unsure of how to respond. Eun Gi's voice broke through the tension.
"Namjoon?" he said softly.
The man beside me nodded, then approached Eun Gi and they embraced—a moment of familiarity.
"일요일까지 안 돌아올 줄 알았는데? (I thought you wouldn't be back til sunday?)" Eun Gi asked in Korean, a hint of surprise in his voice.
I rolled my eyes internally—some things about this situation were painfully obvious.
"나는 당신을 놀라게하고 싶었습니다 (I wanted to surprise you)" Namjoon replied, his smile warm.
My mother, ever gracious, extended her hand. "You must be the famous Kim Namjoon."
He accepted with a nod. "And you must be Ms. Roque," he said, offering a handshake.
"Oh, please, call me Angeline," she responded with a smile. "That's fine."
I finally found my voice, interrupting the warm exchange.
"Uh, sorry—what's going on?" I asked, voice shaky.
My mother approached, wrapping an arm around me in a reassuring gesture.
