Your POV

Things were certainly different without Alex. No one was rambling about Jefferson, I couldn't hear furious typing in the office. It's still hard to believe what happened. I didn't like knowing Alex was gone.

For the first week, we kept an eye on each other. We didn't know what would or could happen. I spent hours at a time in Alex's office and with Angie, Eliza, and Peggy. The sisters were such a big help. But then after the second week...

Since the third week until now, Laf has been leaving the house more. He doesn't tell us where he's been, besides work and Jefferson's house. I'm afraid he's going to wind up in Alex's previous situation.

Currently, it was just after lunch. Hercules was at his shop, and John and I were snuggled on the couch watching Disney. Laf had yet to come home after leaving last night. We had just finished a movie, when I heard the front door open. "I'm back!" It was Herc.

"Welcome home!" John called.

Herc appeared in my vision. "Laf come home yet?" John shook his head.

As if on cue, a phone buzzed. John adjusted slightly so he could pull out his phone from his pocket. Wasn't his. Herc pulled out his phone, a confused look crossing his face. "Not me..."

I glanced at my phone, pressing the home button. Nothing. I sat upright, having been leaning against John. "What?"

That only left Laf's phone. "I thought Laf took his phone last night..." I mumbled.

Sure enough, we had been oblivious to the phone that was slightly buried under things on the coffee table (why are they even called "coffee tables"? like why?). I reached for the phone, leaning back into John's arms when it was in my grasp. I turned on the phone.

iMessage
Adrienne: When'll you be coming back? They'll have to know eventually, Laf

I looked at John, who had been looking at the phone too. John's eyes narrowed slightly. "Coming back? Where?"

I thought a moment. I vaguely remembered the name Adrienne. "Isn't Adrienne the name of that girl Laf was friends with back in France?"

Herc, who had moved to sit next to me, nodded. "I believe so."

"But why would she be messaging him, 'when'll you be coming back?'" John asked.

I shook my head. "Beyond me. There's no way she could be here in America though, we would've known already."

We were stumped. I could see Herc was getting more frustrated the more time we spent thinking about. John's arm around me was noticeably tighter. Worst case scenarios were rushing through my head.

What if she was here, and he's hiding something?

First Alex, now Laf..?

He's going to leave us, isn't he?

I didn't realize I was shaking at the thoughts until I saw Herc's worried expression and John's arms pulling me onto his lap, whispering reassuring words to me. After a few moments, I heard the front door open and threw Laf's phone back onto the table in a panic. A familiar French voice called softly, "mes amours..?"

John's change of facial expression was unreadable as I felt Herc's arms pull me away gently. I let Herc's arms wrap around me tightly, and as I watched John stand up, grabbing Laf's phone in the process, I got as close to Herc as I could, burying my head in his chest, trying to calm myself down. I heard John's retreating footsteps.

I didn't know what was going on. I couldn't hear John or Laf, only Herc's steady heartbeat. After a few minutes, Herc shifted his weight, and I felt him pick me up, standing up. I looked back up to see us going to our bedroom. As we went down the hall, I heard John and Laf's muffled voices. I couldn't make anything out except for one single word from each one of them.

"...France." Laf.

A quiet, forced laugh from John. "France?"

I couldn't hear anything else as Herc entered our room, setting me on the bed. Herc looked at the open doorway. "I'm gonna go see what's happening."

I didn't object as Herc kissed my forehead and left the room, closing the door behind him. I pulled my phone out of my sweater pocket. Even though it was midday, I felt tired. Maybe it was from lounging all day with John. I figured a small nap wouldn't hurt.

After checking the time (3:24), I put my phone on the bedside table. I curled up into a ball and fell asleep quickly, the world around me fading away.

Perhaps it had been smart of me to fall asleep that day. I didn't have to hear the rising voices from only a few rooms down.

Sure, I didn't know what was happening around me, but I swore as I slept, I felt something else slip away yet again. At first I had thought it was just a dream feeling, but little had I known it wasn't. It wasn't a dream; it was reality.

A nightmare I couldn't escape.
