Your POV
I had a feeling from day one that making Charles Lee second-in-command, a general, wasn't the brightest move on Washington's part. Was Alexander practically fuming every day the telltale sign? No. Just one of them.
However, my suspicions had only been proven correct when I alongside other nurses accompanied soldiers to the Battle of Monmouth.
"Attack!" Washington.
"Retreat!" Lee.
"Attack!" Washington.
"Retreat!" Lee. Who did he think he was?
"What're you doing, Lee?! Get back on your feet!" I knew Washington wasn't happy, and he wasn't going to be for a while.
"But there's so many of them!" I heard Lee exclaim.
"I'm sorry, is this not your speed?!" Washington barked. "Hamilton!"
Even from a distance I saw Alexander perk up as he cocked his musket. "Ready, sir!"
"Have Lafayette take the lead!"
Alexander sighed. "Yes, sir..!"

Needless to say, Lee was getting shamed and made fun of by a decent amount of the soldiers in the camp, not failing to include my husband and his two closest friends.
I was debating on taking a break and exiting the nurses' tent when a voice made up my mind for me.
"Washington cannot be left alone to his devices-" Lee's voice spoke.
I opened the flap of the nurses' tent, finding Lee standing on a log and surrounded by soldiers. "-indecisive from crisis to crisis."
Walking a little closer, his words were even more clear, and there was an indistinct harshness and smugness laced through it. "The best thing he can do for the revolution is turn n' go back to plantin' tobacco in Mount Vernon."
There was a wave of muttering and curse words as men exchanged glances and words. Looking amongst the collection of soldiers, I found my husband, watching with narrow eyes. I went to start to approach him, but he had turned and started off before I could.
Making sure nobody was looking, I started after him, keeping a good distance. I hid behind a tree as he eventually approached Alexander, who must've heard it from a distance.
"Strong words from Lee, someone oughta hold him to it," John growled.
"I can disobey direct orders," Alexander responded.
"Then I'll do it."
My eyes widened. My husband was going to get himself into a duel? Even if 'duel' hadn't been mentioned, I knew there was a mutual understanding between them. I knew both John and Alexander were reckless, John somehow even more so. He was always going out of his way and proving to be an admirable soldier; perhaps that was why Washington made him lieutenant colonel.
"Alexander, you're the closest friend that I got," John spoke after a moment.
I looked around the tree to find a.. different sight, but I couldn't say I was surprised. Alexander's hand was on the base of John's neck, John's hand on Alexander's upper arm. There was little space between them, and it only seemed to confirm small suspicions I had had of them.
"Laurens, do not throw away your shot."
I felt like that could've meant two things. One, Alexander was encouraging John to challenge Lee (not that he needed the encouragement), or two, he was telling John not to aim his gun at the sky.
I figured that was the end of their short conversation, turning around. I managed to make it look like I was just taking a walk, deciding to just go back to the nurses' tent.
"Mrs. Laurens!" I knew John's South Carolinian voice anywhere, unable to help but smile at the slight teasing manner in his voice.
I turned again to see John with a smile on his face as Alexander waved. I decided to play along. "Lieutenant Colonel Laurens! Mr. Hamilton!"
John held out his hand, and I walked over after a beat, letting him gently take my hand. He pressed his lips to my knuckles before letting me hold onto his arm instead.
"Why're you two back here instead of with that gathering over there?" I asked after a moment.
"I was just fillin' Alexander in on what Lee was rantin' about," John lied effortlessly. "I hope his words didn't reach you and the ladies' tent, darling."
"Sadly, it did," I responded, "not that it's my own concern to get involved. General Lee has always been a bit... scatterbrained."
"You can say that again," Alexander muttered.
John stifled a chuckle. "Well, what brings you out here, angel? You usually never take a break," he commented.
"The tent was practically empty except for myself and the women. I figured I'd look for you but stumbled out into General Lee's ranting instead," I answered.
I paused. "Speaking of which, I should likely go back. I reckon there's going to be a ruckus with the men soon if General Lee doesn't keep quiet, and the women will need me."
There was slight sadness in John's hazel eyes. "You just got over here, angel.. I've barely seen you all day.."
I sighed. "I know, darling. But as long as you don't get sent anywhere, you can visit me tonight."
My husband smiled, pressing a kiss to my temple. "You know I will, angel."
I smiled, reluctantly letting go of his arm. I was about to walk away when John grabbed my hand.
I looked at him curiously, but John simply pressed another kiss to my hand, sending me his usual charming smile.
"Aight, Laurens, let your lady go before she changes her mind," Alexander joked.
John rolled his eyes, but let go of my hand regardless. "I'll visit later, darling."
"Just keep it up, Lieutenant Colonel," I teased, winking.
Alexander huffed and laughed, John's cheeks turning a faint rose. With that, I started walking away.
After a short distance, I turned my head subtly. John was looking at me a somewhat sad yet worried expression. I didn't turn around fully and acknowledge it; he didn't need to know I knew why.
