Your POV

"Surprise ambush! Grab your guns quickly!" I heard John's voice ring throughout the camp.

My hands froze on the supplies I was organizing. 'That's not good...'

I jumped when I heard the tent flap open and felt the summer heat hit my back. Turning, I was relieved when it was just my husband.

John walked over briskly, hand not holding his musket resting on my waist. "Stay safe, darling."

"I should be saying that to you, my love. I'd rather not treat another bullet wound on you," I responded.

He chuckled, gently kissing my temple. "I'll be alright."

The sudden cracks of musket fire made him stand up straight again, hurrying towards the tent entrance.

"John!" I called before he could leave.

John turned. "Yeah?"

"Keep in the shade as much as you can. It feels like a hundred degrees out here, and your uniform isn't the best for it."

"I will, angel. I'll come right back once we're done. I love you."

"I love you too.."

John smiled reassuringly before cocking his musket and exiting the tent, and I immediately heard his voice shouting orders through the gunfire.

~

After what felt like an eternity, the firing ceased, and I heard victorious shouting.

"I think we got 'em," Lieutenant Rawlins - I was treating him after he got cut by a bayonet - noted.

I nodded. "It sounds like it, Lieutenant."

I finished wrapping his arm, and he thanked me before disappearing. The tent flap opened again to reveal Alexander, stepping in.

"Have you seen Laurens, (Y/N)?"

I shook my head. "Sorry Alex, but I haven't. He told me he'd come here once you guys were done fighting though."

"Knowing him though.. he would've been here by now. He's always worried about you." Alex chuckled lightly.

I gave him a small smile. "That's my beloved husband. I can help you look for him if you'd like."

Alex nodded. "That would be helpful. Thank you, (Y/N)."

Since nobody else needed caring for in the nurse tent I was in, I followed Alex out. Smoothing down my beige dress skirt, I looked around.

Alex was calling his name, and we were walking for a few minutes.

"(Y/N)! 'amilton!"

I turned to see Lafayette a good distance away, knelt on the ground. Even from a distance though, I saw worry in his features. "Come 'ere! Quickly!"

I shot Alex a worried look, hurrying over to where Laf was. Upon reaching him, I gasped, seeing why he was so worried.

There wasn't any blood, but the sight was still hurtful to see. John was on the ground, eyes screwed shut. His breathing was rapid and shallow, and he was trembling.

I dropped to my knees by John's shoulders, placing a hand on his forehead. Burning hot.

My eyes widened. "S-Sunstroke..."

Flashback -

"Listen here! It has come to the attention of the people the death count via sunstroke is rising!"

I was walking down the street with John, holding onto his arm. A crier in the middle of the square was shouting this sudden news. "I knew heat stroke was fatal... but why is it here so suddenly?"

"I don't know, my darling. General Washington said though it's impacting soldiers left and right."

I felt my heart drop. "D-Do we have to go back? What if you were to fall under its trap? It would kill you!" We had left the war scene because of our wedding, and now I was scared to go back.

"Don't worry, angel. We'll be alright out there," John reassured, leaning down and kissing my forehead.

"O-Okay..."

-

We had been alright for a little while. Or... at least I was. I didn't feel like it though, especially at seeing my husband shaking and potentially dying.

"Oh f*ck... f*ck, that's not good. We'll get a doctor. C'mon Lafayette," Alex spoke. Quick, retreating footsteps signaled they ran off.

I moved my hand from John's forehead to his freckled cheek, stroking it gently. The amount of heat emitting from him pained me.

John inhaled shakily, hazel eyes opening about halfway. "(Y-Y/N)?"

"Yes, my love.."

"I-I feel li-like I'm o-on f..fire..." he muttered breathlessly.

"Shh... you'll be alright.."

"I f-feel like I-I'm ab-about to.. to faint.."

I shook my head, blinking back tears on the very verge of spilling. "Y-You need to stay awake, darling. If you don't, you might not w-wake up.."

I suddenly felt John's shaking hand in my free one, barely feeling the lightest squeeze. Continuing to gently stroke his cheek, his head tilted slightly into my hand.

"I don-don't w-want to le-leave you..." he mumbled.

"I-I don't want you to either, my love.. Just hang in there, please..."

"I-I lo-love you, angel.." John muttered after a moment, his thumb brushing against the top of my hand.

I managed a small smile, pressing my lips against his warm hand. "I love you too, darling.. I love you too..."
