John's POV

I would have arrived sooner at Howe's camp, but since I only had a small idea of where Howe and his damned soldiers were. Just thinking of what they could've been doing to my girl pissed me off greatly. They would all burn in hell.

Luckily, I did find the camp. And right in the center of it was my fiancée (so apparently fiancé-male and fiancée-female is a thing? English is weird...), tied to a post, her medical bag still beside her. I held back the urge to run in the camp as I saw two redcoats with her. One I immediately knew was Howe. I guess I had missed somethings because Howe spoke up.

"I guess we'll have to do this the hard way."

I noticed (Y/N) had some fresh bruises and blood, so I knew the two Brits had been there a bit already. But they didn't hold back in hitting her profusely.

I had already been really pissed, but this only tipped me off. I stepped out from the shadows I was hiding in. "Howe!"

All three looked over, (Y/N) the most surprised. Howe just smiled smugly as (Y/N) struggled against her ropes. "Laurens! What a pleasant surprise!"

"You'd shut your mouth if you knew what was good for you," I snapped.

"John, be careful! There's more of them than--"

"Shut up, woman!" the other soldier barked, kicking her.

In a flash, my musket was out and the guy was writhing on the ground, Howe's own musket was pointed at me, and I saw a whole new fear in (Y/N)'s (E/C) eyes.

"Now now, I'd listen to your girl, Laurens," Howe warned with a fake sweetness. "Or else."

I tried to hide my shock when he pulled out a second musket, pointing it at (Y/N)'s head. "I don't want to kill the poor woman sooner than expected. Don't be the cause of your fiancée's death, Laurens."

(Y/N) tried to shrink back, and I reluctantly lowered my musket. She mouthed "don't!" at me but I ignored it, thinking of my own plan.

"Very well, Laurens. Good choice," Howe spoke.

Before he could say anything else, it was back up and I fired another shot, hitting Howe in the arm holding the gun against (Y/N)'s head. It was a risky move, but the gun didn't go off. I fired another shot into his chest and he dropped, not before shooting his second musket at me. I tried moving out of the way but I felt a searing pain shoot up my side. I ignored it as I rushed over to (Y/N), using the bayonet part of my musket to not only cut her free, but to cut Howe as well, preventing him from getting up.

I pulled (Y/N) up and she grabbed her bag of supplies before, we managed to run out. No soldiers saw us. I helped her onto Midnight and we were riding a few minutes before my adrenaline wore off, causing the pain in my side to return. I jerked the reins slightly, and Midnight stopped, sensing what was happening. I heard a faint gasp from (Y/N) and she got off the horse, pulling me off as well.

I stumbled, leaning back against a tree as (Y/N) helped me sit down. One of her hands found mine and I felt it shaking as she used her free hand to grab her bag, pulling out what looked like alcohol, cloth, some form of small pliers, and bandages. Her hand slipped out of mine as she poured alcohol on the cloth and pressed it against my side without warning. My eyes shut quickly.

"I'm sorry, John... I don't mean to hurt you but it's going to..."

I opened my eyes, giving her a small reassuring smile. "It's okay, love. I'll be fine."

(Y/N) exhaled shakily and dabbed at my side with the cloth, and I tried my hardest to ignore the stinging sensation. She set the cloth down after a moment and picked up the small pliers. "This is the worst part. Try and bear it, John. Please."

(Y/N) grabbed my hand again as I nodded. "Don't worry, (Y/N)."

I squeezed her hand and she hesitated a moment before I felt the pliers and hissed, my eyes screwing shut. The pain was something I'd never felt before and was extremely hard to ignore, but I tried so I wouldn't cause (Y/N) anymore more emotional pain.

"I-I'm sorry... I'm so so s-sorry..." I heard (Y/N) whispering, squeezing my hand. "I've almost got it."

I felt the pain for a few more long moments before I finally decided to open my eyes. (Y/N) smiled weakly at me and I looked down at probably one of the bad moments to, as she finally slowly pulled out the bullet. I winced as blood seeped down my side. She put more alcohol on the cloth and wiped away the blood. The sting felt weak compared to the pliers in my side.

I watched as (Y/N) let go of my hand, pulling me forward slightly so she could wrap my side. When she was done, I leaned back again the tree, breathing unevenly. I caught (Y/N) by surprise by grabbing her and pulling her to my chest, wrapping my arms tightly around her.

(Y/N) didn't hesitate in wrapping her arms around me and I heard her sniffling. I pulled her back slightly as a tear trickled down her cheek. I put my hand up to her face, wiping it away.

"You're brave, you know that? Enduring those damn British men and their harassment and saving my *ss from a worse fate. You're so very brave, love."

(Y/N) giggled slightly. "T-Thank you. Thank you for s-saving me."

We stayed on the ground awhile before deciding to go back to the camp. I helped (Y/N) up and onto Midnight, who was waiting patiently the whole time. (Y/N) sat in front of me, and I wrapped my arms around her and held onto the reins so she wouldn't fall. She leaned against my chest as Midnight started her way back to our camp.

I looked down briefly to see (Y/N) already fast asleep. I chuckled to myself, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"You don't have to worry anymore, my love."
