Alex's POV
"What the... what's that?" I asked, pointing ahead.
John followed my hand and squinted. "I can't-- Wait! It's... it's a trapped turtle! C'mon!"
"Hold on, Jacky (when I finally use the name Alex calls John in most oneshots)-- hey!"
John pulled me along quickly as we approached the turtle, who was trapped in a net. I followed the top of the net nervously and was met with a dark mass above us.
I tapped John, who was already trying to break the net. "Jacky, there's something above us..."
"What do you mean--? A ship!" For the first time today, a flash of fear washed over him, but quickly disappeared as he turned back to the net.
"John, we should get going..." I started, grabbing his arm.
He shook me off. "But the turtle!"
I heard muffled shouting above us, realizing that whatever was above us, it contained humans on it. I grabbed John's arm again. "They might see us, John! There are humans above us!"
John was too busy breaking the net, and I noticed he hadn't gotten very far. "C'mon..!" I ushered.
"Please Lexi! Let me do this!" John pleaded.
"There are plenty more turtles in the sea, Jacky! There's only one of you! Please come on!" I exclaimed, grabbing his arm a third time.
John hesitated, but finally pulled away. I felt victorious, but then I saw something behind John. Another net. "Sh*t! John move!"
"Wait wha--? Alex!"
The net encircled him suddenly, causing me to lose my grip on his arm. John's bold blue tail was struggling against the net to free himself. I managed to reach my hand in through the holes of the net, grabbing his hand tightly. There were boisterous shouts above us.
John looked at me, fear evident in his hazel eyes. We felt the net starting to get pulled up. I watched as the turtle slowly got dragged upwards until I couldn't see it anymore.
"No! Sh*t! No no no!" I exclaimed, trying to pull down. However, there was only me and John, and who knew how many humans above.
I kept trying to pull, but no luck. "N-No! Stop!"
"Lexi stop! It's not worth it!" John spoke hurriedly.
I was about to reply when there was a sharp tug, causing John's hand to escape mine. I only saw his frightened hazel eyes one last time before I watched him get pulled up, my attempts at trying to stop the net useless.
~
That was only a mere few hours ago, and I was still in the same area. I hadn't left. I was racking my brain, trying to think of all plausible solutions to getting my boyfriend back.
I couldn't think of anything, so I found myself swimming quickly in the direction of where the so-called ship went.
It didn't take long before I found many wooden beams, realizing that I was at what John had said was a port (John was the human know-it-all between us). I faced yet another problem though.
Most ships looked completely the same from under the water. I'd have to go up to find John.
Hesitantly, I swam up, sticking my head above the surface. The air felt weird blowing against my face but I shrugged it off; John was my top priority.
After scanning the area, I found a ship that almost looked like the one that had taken him. I advanced toward it. I heard the shouts much more clearly as a loud and raspy male voice barked different orders. But I couldn't get up there. How would I get up there?
Maybe I didn't have to.
The ship didn't look like the sturdiest thing in the world, but it'd do for a ship that's job was to capture things. I angled my green tail back, pausing a moment before swinging it at the ship's wooden base. It made a satisfying banging noise as I heard the shouts of the men die down, confused.
I did it again.
And again.
I didn't stop until I saw a crack starting to form. Then, I only hit it harder, more forcefully. And I didn't stop again until splinters of wood flew around me and sea water started flowing into the crack.
The ship tilted and rocked slightly, and I heard the men shout even more frantically, realizing their situation. I heard things sliding around on top as footsteps 'thud'ed against boards.
"F*ck! Get the goddamn merman!" the same male voice as earlier demanded angrily.
They must've not gotten John in-time however. I watched a glass tank slide against the ship, the sudden movement tipping it. A blue blur moved quickly and there was a splash. I ducked back underwater as the bubbles disappeared.
"Lexi!"
John's arms launched around me, hugging me tightly. I returned the hug just as tight, chuckling to myself.
We pulled apart after a minute or so. John stared at me, his hazel eyes sparkling in what looked like love and admiration. "H-How did you--?"
"It doesn't matter. You're safe, that's what matters. I'd have traveled all the way across the ocean if I had to," I responded.
I saw a blush cross John's freckled cheeks, and his arms wrapped around me again. "Thank you, Lexi."
"Anytime Jacky."
John hesitated a moment -to my confusion-, but then pressed his lips to mine. I held onto him tightly, pulling him closer and letting my eyes close. My hand subconsciously moved to cup his cheek and I felt him smile into our kiss.
We pulled apart after some moments, still holding onto each other. Everything felt better again. John was okay, so I was okay too.
