Your POV
Needless to say, I could be called special. Why? I could see all the little red strings that connected every soulmate to each other. Nobody else could, only me. I called them the "strings of fate".
Of course, I could see my own, and mine connected to none other than Hercules Mulligan. My best friend John's connected to Peggy Schuyler. All my friends knew about my ability, but John, my closest friend, was the only one who knew my soulmate.
But, it seemed our own soulmates didn't see us any more than good friends. My life was twisted when Herc confessed his love... not to me, but Peggy. Not too long after, they started dating.
I couldn't keep John's soulmate a secret, finally telling him the truth as well as something I'd hidden since forever. But he told me we'd try a way to fix it.
~ three years later ~
"Guys! Guys, guess what?!" Peggy squealed as she ran into the house.
I was playing Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (ha one of my fav games) on Alex's Switch with John, Alex, Laf, and Gwen (another oc heh-).
"What is it, Pegs?" I asked as my character, Lucina, KO'd Dark Pit, making John huff.
"Herc and I are engaged!"
Alex paused the game, all of us looking at each other in surprise. But John and I shared a particular look.
Gwen was the first to speak up. "That's awesome, Peggy!"
"I know! We went out to Long Island yesterday and he proposed on the boardwalk!" Peggy exclaimed.
I turned as Peggy held up her hand. Sure enough, a glittery ring was placed on her finger.
"Damn, Pegs... I didn't think he'd have the guts to do it," John replied after a moment. "He was always saying how much of a wreck he was trying to figure it out."
"I just can't believe he did it..." I muttered, loud enough only for John to hear. He placed his hand on my shoulder, sending me a small, sympathetic smile.
"Well, tell Herc I said 'congrats' on finally not being a pussy," I joked, raising my volume again. Everyone laughed.
"You're not going to say anything to them?" John whispered.
I sighed, shaking my head. "I can't do that. They're too in love. You can... but I just can't, Jackie."
John shook his head. "Then I'll go down with you. I'm not leaving my best friend in the dust."
~ one year later ~
Their ceremony was slightly different than others. Rather than all the bridesmaid and groomsmen standing with them, we got to just sit in the front rows.
I sat next to John, anxiously watching the ceremony pass. It seemed to be going terrifyingly slow, like the world knew what was happening.
"Do you, Hercules Mulligan, take Margarita Schuyler to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and to hold, through sickness and through health, through better and through worse, until death do you part?"
"I do."
The priest turned to Peggy. "And do you, Margarita Schuyler, take Hercules Mulligan to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love and to hold, through sickness and through health, through better and through worse, until death do you part?"
"I do.."
The couple smiled, as did the priest. "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride."
Finally, my heart dropped. This was it.
I subconsciously took John's hand, looking over to see his eyes widen. "I-I can see the string," he whispered.
The red strings seemed to be being pulled tighter and tighter, tension about to rip them apart. It felt like my chest was starting to hurt.
Suddenly, I watched as the two strings snapped. Quickly, effortlessly. Herc and Peggy's broken strings trailed back up the alter, tying together into a small bow. It felt like my half was tugging, like it was trying to escape.
"I-I'm sorry, Jackie.." I muttered, barely audible over the clapping and cheering. My chest started hurting more and more, as did my heart.
"It's okay, (N/N).." he whispered back.
There was this sharp, painful sensation. Like my heart had been pulled out. Not literally, but I watched as our broken strings fluttered to the floor, turning to black like they had been burned.
My free hand flew up to my chest, and I saw red spreading around where my heart was, staining the sunflower yellow dress.
The world was a haze, and in a couple long moments, everything seemed to be in a panic. I slipped off the bench and onto my side as the sensation spread, feeling lighter and lighter every second. People were calling for me and others were crowded around John, who my guess was slumped against the bench.
Through blurry vision, I saw John and I's blackened strings. They closed the little distance between them, tying into a knot. Not a bow, but a knot. At the moment I knew they found out the truth, I slipped away.
I opened my eyes moments later, feeling fine. Sitting up, I was startled to see my own body. I looked up to see John's faded self stand up off the bench. He looked at himself, then my old self, eyes wide. But he walked over, holding his hand out and gently pulling me up.
Everyone was making panicky comments about not only us, but the black string connecting where our hearts were. I watched as our old respective soulmates called for each of us, tears streaming down.
I looked between John and I, seeing a faded black string tied into the same knot. But I didn't know what it meant. All I knew was that those red strings had sealed our fate.
