Your POV
"This already isn't good... It would be a damn miracle if he pulled out of this alive."
I was standing with another nurse and a doctor nearby to John. John had tried staying awake, but shortly after Alex and Laf had brought the doctor, he had slipped into unconsciousness.
I had witnessed sunstroke with a few people, yet I didn't recall any of them pulling through. I didn't want my husband dying, leaving me alone - that thought terrified me. But John was always so reckless no matter the season; perhaps we had been just waiting for the inevitable.
Dampening a cool cloth, I walked over to John, carefully placing it on his forehead. His breathing was still extremely shallow, and he still trembled intently. It didn't take much to know he was struggling to hold on.
Exhaling shakily, I took John's hand in mine, rubbing the top of it gently. "P-Please pull through, my love.. I-I need you..."
-
A few days had gone by, and John was still unconscious. I was with him nearly whenever I wasn't needed with another soldier. Today was no different... for the most part.
Holding John's hand, I noticed it wasn't shaking as much. It still was, yes, but not as bad as the day before. His breathing was still pretty rough though.
I was praying that his breathing wouldn't just stop. That he'd survive. The chances were far too slim for my liking, but I was holding on to whatever hope was left.
"We have our whole life ahead.." I spoke quietly. "Once this war is done we can go home... we could have a family... Please, John..."
-
Another two days. To everyone's surprise, John's breathing was slowly starting to even out. His shaking continued to lessen despite his still-burning temperature.
I wiped John's face gently with a fresh cool cloth. "You're such a fighter, my love," I mused softly. "There's more hope after all.."
"Anything new?"
I looked up to see Alex walking over, standing next to me.
I shook my head. "No... But.. his breathing is starting to even out more. And he's shaking less. It's just his temperature I'm scared for."
Alex placed a hand on my shoulder. "Laurens is one of the strongest soldiers I know. Both physically and emotionally. It's not if he wakes up, it's when."
I sighed. "You really think so, Alex?"
"I do. I really do."
~
It had been a full week since John had slipped into unconsciousness. To my complete surprise, his temperature was starting to cool down. Barely, but it was. His breathing still caught and he still trembled, but unlike days prior, it wasn't as intense.
I had pulled the now room-temperature cloth off John's head, going to dampen another. I walked back over to John, setting the new cool cloth on his forehead.
I placed my hand on his burning cheek, my eyes widening slightly when his head tilted ever-so-slightly into my hand. "J-John..?"
Tears pooled in my eyes when his hazel eyes started to slowly flutter open. He blinked a few times, eyes meeting mine.
"M-My angel..." he whispered, voice dry and just barely audible.
I let the tears slip down my face, starting to smile. "My love.."
John started to try and sit up, but I placed a gentle hand on his chest. "You need rest, my love. Don't sit up."
"I-I've been unconscious, th-that's plenty o-of rest..."
I couldn't help but laugh quietly. "That doesn't count, John."
My husband didn't say anything, simply shakily lifting his hand and resting it over mine on his chest.
With John's head tilted slightly to the side, I could use my free hand to carefully undo his messy ponytail, moving the cloth to run a hand through his dark curls. He relaxed more, making me smile lightly. "How are you feeling, darling?"
"W-Warm... Very, ve-very warm..." John muttered.
I placed the cloth back on his forehead. "You'll recover, my love." I held his hand, which still trembled slightly, and lifted it, placing a gentle kiss on it.
A smile crossed John's face. "Th-Thank you, angel.. I l-love you."
"I love you too, my darling."
~ two weeks later ~
I had stepped out of the tent for a break when two strong arms slipped around my waist and lifted me slightly, making me almost squeal. The white sleeves were rolled up, and the freckles dotting his arms were a dead giveaway.
John kept his hands on my waist, turning me around. I looked up at him and he sent me his usual charming smile. "You're so beautiful. You know that?"
A light rose dusted my cheeks, and I placed my hands on his chest. "T-Thank you, love."
I let him hold me closer, placing a kiss on my forehead. "Thank you for taking care of me, darling."
"I only did what I thought would help you. I thought you were going to join the angels after a few days.."
"Not yet, darling. We still have the rest of our lives together."
Thank God for miracles.
