John's POV

She had been suffering from some illness we couldn't place a finger on. It had been eating away at her slowly. We couldn't do anything about it. I had to watch everyday as the love of my life got worse and worse.

Until her body finally couldn't fight it.

~

"T-take your time... p-please..." she whispered.

I nodded, holding onto her hand and blinking away tears. "I will..."

She smiled faintly. "You b-better."

I chuckled softly. "Don't worry, my love.."

She kept smiling, but I could see the life draining away from her once sparkling (E/C) eyes. "I-I love yo-u..."

I squeezed her hand gently. "I-I love you more, (Y/N)."

Her eyes closed, the ghost of a smile still on her pale face. Her chest moved up and down a few more times, until it stopped rising.

I couldn't speak, couldn't yell. I could barely breath. I could only let the tears stream down my face, wondering why 'us' had become 'me'.

~

It had been a little over a year since I lost her. She was supposed to be my wife. I had proposed and everything. But then the sickness came.

But I knew she was there. I could feel her presence. She went with me everywhere, watching over me. Sometimes, when I just couldn't seem to pick myself up, I could see her. She'd cup my face, and whisper reassuring things I could faintly make out. Then she'd leave my sights after a few minutes, but I knew she was still there, and I was happy again.

She even followed me when I went to South Carolina a few weeks ago. We were fighting for Yorktown. I don't know why she always went with me, but I never minded. It was almost a sense of comfort feeling her there with me.

On this particular day, however, I didn't sense her as well as previous days. I figured she was just wandering around the area as we readied to attack British soldiers. I could only hope luck was on our side today.

At last, we were ready to attack. We charged, ready to kill.

~

The fight had been going on a while, but I couldn't tell who was winning.

BAM!

I was caught off-guard. I clutched the growing bloody spot on my chest as I stumbled over, my eyes meeting the starry sky above.

I could feel the blood seeping through my spaces of my hand, staining the blue uniform I adorned and the green grass. I could taste a hint of copper, yet my eyes were trained on the sky.

After what must've been a few minutes, I felt (Y/N)'s presence again. But this time, I could actually see her. She was in front of me. After a moment, she reached her hand out. It was her silent way of saying "come".

I thought back. To everything I'd done. To meeting Alexander, then (Y/N) at the ball. Going off to war and trying to start the first all-black battalion. The proposal, her sickness.

I realized now the three-thousand men I'd recruited... what would happen to them? I was more than sure they'd get sent back, and that bothered me... but I couldn't do anything now.

The once searing pain was slowly subsiding as I felt myself slipping away. I raised one of my arms to the sky weakly. My voice barely reached above a whisper.

"Tomorrow there'll be more of us..."

My hand dropped, and I expected it to pass through (Y/N)'s translucent hand, but she grabbed my hand before it touched the ground. Then she pulled me up.

I was confused. Then I saw my own body. I saw the bloody uniform, my pale, lifeless skin. My eyes had finally closed, one hand still over my chest and the other resting in the bloody grass.

I turned back to (Y/N), and a smile slowly graced her face. "I told you to take your time... yet here you are not even two years later."

I chuckled. "Sorry... I just couldn't wait to be with you again... for real."

We both laughed and there was a flash of light. When the light cleared, we were on clouds. I realized we were up in heaven.

I looked at (Y/N), and she wasn't translucent anymore. I could see her sparkling (E/C) eyes, and the fluffy white wings that were on her back.

Before I could say anything, her arms were wrapped tightly around my shoulders. I chuckled and wrapped my arms around her waist, kissing the top of her head.

We pulled apart a few moments later, and I grabbed her hands, intertwining our fingers.

"I missed you, my love," I spoke after a moment.

"I was with you the whole time, John," she replied, giggling.

"It wasn't the same. It wasn't that often I could even see you, let alone be able to hold you."

"True. Now we can be together again," (Y/N) responded.

I nodded, letting go of her hands just to pull her closer. She rested her head against my chest. I felt truly happy for the first time in God knows how long.

It was finally the us I had wanted all this time.
