~ four months after (Y/N)'s return home ~

Your POV

Life had been going well since I came home. Frances was going to turn five in a matter of weeks! She was honestly very excited.

Currently, all three of us were in Central Park. Frances was giggling on top of John's shoulders as we stopped at a bench. John sat her down and we looked around, and I accidentally locked eyes with a familiar trio. My eyes widened and I looked at John for help. John's face was unreadable though, and he wasn't looking at me. They were walking over to us.

Frances was about to ask what was happening, when someone else spoke up.

"We seem to find you guys a lot here." I looked to see Alexander.

"Yeah..." I answered quietly.

"It's been like what... four years since we've actually talked? Why?"

I heard Frances get off the bench and tug my leggings, but my mind was already racing.

Flashback -

"The charge against me is a connection with one James Reynolds, for purposes of improper speculation..."

"My real crime is an amorous connection with his wife for a considerable time, with his knowing consent..."

~

"Ç'est la seule solution..."

"Pardonne-moi pour la douleur, mes amours... la tempête s'éclaircir un jour..."

~

"This is exactly why I tried to leave at night! It's been a month since Lafayette left and two since Alex! It shouldn't take this long."

"I can't do this..."

Slam!

Flashback End -

I was pulled out of my daze, tears in my eyes, by Frances.

Lafayette looked at the small girl, almost shocked. "Did you..."

I picked up Frances, and she looked at me, her hazel eyes widening when she saw my tears. Her tiny hand wiped my cheeks. "Why is mommy crying?"

John looked over, confused by what Frances meant, then he saw what she was doing. I couldn't read the emotion on his face after that.

The guys' eyes widened when she "mommy". I answered the question I knew they wanted to ask.

"Frances Eleanor Laurens. That's her," I said. Frances turned slightly and waved, smiling brightly. "Hi! Daddy and mommy have talked about you guys before!"

I didn't know how to react, but Hercules chuckled. "I hope it was good things."

Frances nodded. "Yeah!" I wanted to praise her for being so nice. Frances turned back to me, remembering what she had been doing a minute ago. "Why is mommy sad?"

I think the guys realized Frances had no idea what happened, because Alexander's eyes widened. He knew why. We all knew except for Frances.

I racked my brain. Either expose the guys or lie to her. Frances is a smart girl though. She wouldn't believe me. "Well... you see..." I didn't know how to begin. I just held onto her tighter. "Why don't you and I go on a quick walk."

I set her down, and she immediately grabbed my index finger. We started walking without another word.

As we walked, I explained everything I could in a way a four-year-old could understand. Luckily, Frances got everything.

"So... those three men hurt mommy and daddy by leaving?"

I nodded. "Sorta, Fran. Daddy was a lot stronger though. He made sure I was happy on the days I wasn't feeling good. I took it a lot worse than he did."

"Did they make you cry?"

I chuckled. "Quite a bit. But daddy helped me out a lot."

Frances jumped, cheering. "Yay daddy!"

I laughed, scooping her up again. "How bout we go back to them now, yeah? Mommy feels way better!"

Frances nodded. "Okay mommy!"

I started to walk back over. About halfway I put Frances down and she started running to the four men ahead. I almost panicked. "Frances wait!"

Frances kept running, and I realized why. She was trying to get to John, who was pissed. He was yelling. I'd never see him get this aggressive over what happened.

I started to chase after Frances, but she was already almost there. By the time I got near, Frances was already held in John's arms as I heard her... yelling? It was hard to tell with a toddler like her.

"You made mommy cry! Bad men!" Frances exclaimed. I could tell John was almost surprised, and so were the guys. Frances was trying to escape John's grip. "Why would you hurt mommy?!"

I couldn't even pinpoint a single emotion of mine as I ran up. "Frances! Don't yell!" I exclaimed.

Frances looked over at me. "But... but these bad men!" she said.

I took her from John, stepping a couple feet away. I faced away from the guys. "Look Fran, I understand you're upset over what they did, but that was a long time ago! I have daddy! You both make me super happy!"

Frances giggled. "Okay. I'm sorry mommy!"

I booped her nose. "It's fine. You're only four." (and holy sh*t did I make her one smart four-year-old. so worth it)

I turned around to see the trio walking away. I placed Frances down, walking over to him. "John, what did you say?"

John scratched the back of his head. "A lot... I definitely got more mad at them then before..."

I sighed, looking down at Frances. "At least she didn't catch much of it."

"I shouldn't have yelled. I'm sorry, chickadee."

I looked back up at John. "It's okay, Freckles. You were just trying to protect me."

We both smiled, and John looked down at Frances. "Now how about we continue our day, huh?"

Frances nodded. "Yeah!"

John bent down and Frances climbed onto his shoulders. I grinned as John wrapped an arm around my waist. I leaned into his side as we started walking again.

They really did make me super happy.
