Your POV
"Number ten paces..."
"FIRE!"
I watched from the side as my husband was shot by John Laurens. He fell to the ground, clutching his side as Aaron Burr -his second- rushed over. I ran over as well. "Charles!"
I dropped down next to him, my (F/C) dress pooling around me. I saw the blood seeping through his blue uniform, the sudden paleness of his skin. He was dying.
"Don't you dare die on me, Charles Lee... I can't lose you."
Charles moved one of his hands from his side, and even though it was bloody I grabbed it anyways.
"You know I love you right..? Mrs. (Y/N) Lee," he said. I smiled sadly.
"Yeah... I do know. Very much so."
He smiled slightly. "Good. Remember that."
I was about to speak when I saw his dark eyes shut. "Charles?? CHARLES!"
His grip on my hand loosened. I felt the tears. "Charles Lee! You promised!"
Silence.
I shot up from my bed, breathing heavily. That nightmare always seemed to plague me the most. He was alive... yet the thought haunted me.
My sudden movement caused Charles to wake up. He sat up as well. "You okay, love?"
I shook my head. "Nightmare again?"
I nodded. "It's so stupid! You're alive yet I'm constantly plagued with this! You shouldn't have to put up with this..." I felt tears.
Charles wrapped his arms around me, pulling me flush against his chest.
"It's not stupid, (Y/N). Sure, it may have happened months ago, but it's not stupid. Love, if I didn't want to deal with it I wouldn't have made you (Y/N) Lee, would I?"
I nodded, sniffling. Charles stroked my hair reassuringly. "I'm here now, I'll be here tomorrow. I'll be here everyday. I made a promise to you, and I will keep it to the grave, okay?"
I felt a smile tug at my lips. I looked up at him. "Okay. I love you, Charles Lee."
Charles smiled. "I love you more, (Y/N) Lee."
With that, we laid down again, facing each other. Charles pulled me closer and rested his head on top of mine, one arm wrapping securely around my waist. I fell asleep quickly and peacefully, in the warm embrace of my husband.
And you know what? He wasn't wrong. He kept his promise until our final days, where even then we loved each other in the afterlife. He really was my everything.
