Your POV

Knock knock.

Picking up my light (F/C) skirts with one hand, I opened the door with the other. On the other side was General Washington and Marquis de Lafayette, both acquaintances of my husband.

"Mrs. Laurens?" General Washington asked, a frown on his usually stoic face.

"That is me. How may I help you?" I asked, looking confused between the solemn pair.

"We should discuss this inside," he responded.

Nodding, I stepped aside, opening the door further. "My apologies, I should've offered that immediately! Please, do come in!"

The two stepped in and I closed the door gently behind us, leading them to the living room.

"If you'll please pardon me a moment, I need to put my Frances to bed. I hope you don't mind."

Lafayette waved his hand. "It is fine, madame."

Smiling, I hurried off to Frances's small room. She fell asleep upon settling in my arms, and I set her in her crib. Kissing her forehead softly, I shut the door behind me with a gentle click, going back to the living room.

Reentering the living room, I noticed the pair were still standing. "How may I help you? Don't be afraid to sit down!"

Washington waved me off. "I'd... recommend you have a seat yourself, Mrs. Laurens."

I was confused, but sat down regardless. "What's wrong?" I asked hesitantly after a moment.

Washington only looked at Lafayette, sending him a subtle nod. I finally noticed the bundle in Lafayette's hands as he came over, gently handing it to me.

"W-What's this?" I asked softly, looking at the bold blue bundle. I looked up to Lafayette, then Washington for answers.

For once, Washington seemed hesitant on answering something, before finally revealing. "Mrs. Laurens... I'm afraid your husband, Lieutenant Coronal John Laurens, had engaged himself in a gun fight on August twenty-seventh. He was shot and killed during the same battle."

I froze, everything finally clicking. I wondered if the emotions in my eyes were evident as I stared at Washington for a few moments. As tears started clouding my vision, I stared at the bundle.

It was John's coat.

Hugging the bundle tightly to my chest, tears were streaming down my face as the realization seemed to dawn on me and taunt me.
