Chloe looked down at her four kittens several hours later. Three of them were dead.
Over the course of the day, Chloe was struggling to bring her kittens into the world. Duke tried to help as best as he could. But the first one didn't come until eight hours after Chloe went into labor. Her little girl didn't even make a sound. She had been born dead.
The second, another girl, at least came into the world squealing. But while Chloe was getting ready for the third, she too died. The third was another girl. She had squeaked once and then went still.
Staring at her beautiful daughters who would never be able to see the world, Chloe turned her attention to her fourth and last kitten. A little boy, he was the smallest one of all and didn't make a single noise. Chloe was afraid he wasn't going to make it either. But she held onto the hope that he would.
Licking her son's tiny head, Chloe whispered, "I promise, you will make it."
