"Maybe he had plans and they were canceled last minute.
Or maybe he was making it up—and no. Taehyung doesn't like that thought. The thought of Jeongguk lying to him so he doesn't hurt his feelings.
It would make sense, in theory, because Taehyung is a mutual friend and, if Jeongguk rejected him, it would get really awkward within the group.
Even so, Jimin is persistent and wants Taehyung to stop pining so bad.
So, because of Jimin's insistence, he tries again."

"Jeongguk is going to that dance by the way." Jimin nods his head towards the sign in front of the art building.
"The fundraiser for the club he's a part of?" Taehyung asks obviously, nodding his head sarcastically. "Yeah, sounds about right."
Jimin shoves him playfully. "You should ask him out and go together."
Taehyung sighs wistfully. "Yeah. No. I don't think so."
His best friend doesn't seem to be happy about his answer. He puffs his cheeks out, smiling, but deep down, Taehyung knows he's really rooting for him to get together with Jeon Jeongguk. He's genuinely a little upset Tae isn't taking this opportunity. "Aw come on." He whines. "You've had a crush on him forever. Make a move already."
He's right. Taehyung has liked Jeongguk for a long time now, but as much as he'd like to invite the other to go to the dance together, it's fruitless. He's tried time and time again to ask the other out, but he just... doesn't seem interested.
And Taehyung isn't sure he's ready for a flat out rejection.
"I'll think about it." He says anyway, knowing he won't. "I gotta get to class, Jimin. I'll text you later."

The first time Taehyung had asked Jeongguk out was when the gang had made plans to go to the fair.
They were going in pairs and Taehyung didn't want to end up going on rides alone, so he asked Jeongguk if he wanted to go with them.
He looked a little nervous when Taehyung had asked him; his large doe eyes darting around him skittishly, Taehyung almost cooed. "Who else is going?"
Taehyung hummed, naming off the boys in their group, and Jeongguk visibly relaxed. "Oh, great. Sounds like fun. I'll be there." He smiled, stiff shoulders falling easily. "Is it okay if I bring a friend?"
And yeah, Taehyung said it was okay, but it wasn't. It can't be okay when your 'friend' is Kim Yugyeom, super hot dancer with long legs, thick ass, strong thighs, and a blinding smile.
He ended up sitting at a food stand all alone, waiting for the group to come back from the ride they went on, his heart feeling a little tense at the sight of Yugyeom flirting with Jeongguk on their way back. Just a little.

The second time, Taehyung was a little more forward.
It was noon and he just got out of class when he spotted Jeongguk across campus.
"Jeongguk!" He called with a smile as he ran over to him.
"Hey, Tae." Taehyung felt his face heat up as the other used the nickname. All of his friends called him that but it just seemed nicer coming from Jeongguk.
