Taehyung's just trying his best to pay for college by working as a waiter. Jeongguk keeps on bringing his dates to the restaurant where Taehyung works.
Or: The waiter first-meet AU that no one asked for.
~~~
Taehyung is surprisingly not that late to his shift. His final lecture that day ran a little late (not his fault), the queue for coffee was long (not his fault) and there was an elderly lady who was crossing the road that he couldn't just leave on her own. So again, not his fault.
Maybe the guy he stopped to flirt with at the bus stop was his fault, but who is Taehyung to ignore the possibility of fate? The guy had complimented Taehyung on his satchel which everyone knows is just an alternative way of saying, "Hey, I wanna get in your pants." Obviously.
That's why Taehyung isn't that mad when he strolls a whole ten minutes late into the restaurant at ten minutes past seven. It's not even the latest he's been this month, he notes to himself.
He hears the clatter of pots and pans and dishes as he makes his way stealthily through the kitchen, trying his best to blend into his surroundings so his boss doesn't notice-
"Nice of you to join us," Yoongi says in a low voice.
Ah. Well there goes that plan.
Taehyung spins around to face Min Yoongi, son of the owner of this delightful establishment, man in charge of the lowly waiters such as Taehyung. Yoongi's face is constantly set into a perfect mask of boredom. Taehyung hasn't quite worked out yet whether it's because everyone really pisses him off that much, or if it's just sheer dedication to having a wrinkle free face when he's older.
Taehyung plasters the most sincere smile he can on his face (he's taken an acting class in the past so it's pretty convincing if he says so himself.) "Evening, Yoongi. How's it going?"
The new plan: don't mention the lateness. Don't let Yoongi mention it, either.
"It was great until one of my waiters decided he doesn't work to traditional time and rocked up late to the busiest shift of the week." Yoongi looks up from where he's checking through receipts, hard eyes meeting Taehyung's.
Shit. Next plan: Denial?
Taehyung fake gasps and then pointedly ignores Yoongi's (fond, definitely fond) eye roll. "Who? Who would do such a thing? How dare they! Wait 'til I get my hands on the bastard who-"
"Taehyung."
"Yeah?"
"Table three is waiting for you. You can help Jin lock up tonight to pay me back the time."
"Yes, hyung."
Then Taehyung bolts out of there before Yoongi can add any extras to his punishment.
He's made that mistake before.
"Who the fuck books a table for fifteen people on a Friday night? Do they have no conscience?" Taehyung grumbles to himself, gathering menus together from behind the little waiter station.
"I'll swap you."
Taehyung swings around to look at the angel that uttered the best words Taehyung has heard all day. All week, even.
"Jiminie, normally I would snap your hand off, but as your best friend I need to ask, what the fuck are you thinking? Fifteen people, Jiminie! Fifteen!" Taehyung is waving the menus in the air now, glancing quickly at his table to make sure they don't think he's abandoned them because he is a Good waiter.
