Career Advice Consultation

After break, the girls peeled away from the boys and headed to Arithmancy. Mikayla was watching the clock, because half way through she'd have to leave for her careers appointments. She raised her hand after she gathered her things into her bag, she waved goodbye to Hermione as she left. Mikayla stood nervously outside of McGonagall's office, she knew Harry was still inside because she could hear his voice through the door. She couldn't catch what was being said, but she waited anxiously. Suddenly there was a lot of shouting as Harry left the room in a hurry, "what happened in there?" She whispered, "Umbridge. See you at class." Mikayla nodded and watched as her friend scurried away. She nervously knocked on the door, "come on in Black." Mikayla smiled, opening the door and taking a seat while politely saying hello to her Professor/ Head of House.

"Well, Black, this meeting is to talk over any career ideas you might have, and to help you decide which subjects you should continue into the sixth and seventh years. Have you had any thoughts about what you would like to do after you leave Hogwarts?" McGonagall plastered a smile on her face to give Mikayla a little ease as Umbridge scribbled down notes. "Yes I have Professor, I'm thinking about going in two directions. I'd like to work in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures for a few years and possibly pursuing teaching afterwards." McGonagall looked at Mikayla quite impressed by how well Mikayla had planned out her future Career plans. "They ask for a minimum of six NEWTs and nothing under 'Exceeding Expectations' grade. Do you have any questions?"

Mikayla nodded, "what subjects do you suggest I continue to reach my goals?" McGonagall took out a piece of paper, "first I believe that you'll need Defence Against the Dark Arts as you'll need to know how to protect yourself. I would also suggest Transfiguration, as you'll need to Transfigure and Untransfigure during your missions, you need a 'Exceeding Expectation' in your OWLs to continue with me, and you're averaging 'Outstanding' maybe you can help tutor Mr Potter as he needs to go up a grade." Mikayla agrees to help Harry, she could hear Umbridge scoff at this information. McGonagall scribbled down this information, just so she could keep a record of this information. "I would also advice you to continue Charms, as it's very useful to have. I would also advise you continue with Potions, you're currently grading an average of 'Outstanding', meaning Professor Snape will accept you in his class next year if you score that in your OWLs. I'd suggest you do Care of Magical Creatures, Professor Hagrid believes that you'll receive more than an 'Acceptable' in your OWL which is his requirement. But according to this you only need an 'Outstanding' in your OWLs for this career, so it's up to you." Mikayla nods, she has been hoping she wouldn't have to take Hagrid's class, she loves the man to death but she can't see herself doing too amazing in her NEWTs with his teaching style. "I also believe Herbology would be a good subject to have, as it'll help with your potions and possibly your teaching Career." Mikayla nodded agreeing with Professor McGonagall, "I think continuing Ancient Runes is a good idea for you as it'll help you reach the minimum requirements. I also suggest that you take up the Alchemy and Apparation électives as both will help your future career."

"Miss Black, may I ask you why you want to pursue a career in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures?" Mikayla shivered at the sound of Umbridge's voice. Mikayla played it off with a smile, turning to look at the toad-like woman. "Well, I believe that some laws are outdated and in need to be changed. Also I believe some changes need to be made in the Beast and Being divisions due to inaccuracy and the stereotyping of some species. Plus there's been some situations that I have disagreed with the Departments rulings and I want to open their minds." Umbridge looked utterly disgusted at how polite Mikayla worded her reasoning as she could not find an argument until one struck her. "Well Miss Black, the Ministry does a very thorough background checks and looks through records of those they hire." Mikayla nodded, "I am aware Headmistress and I don't see why that would be a conflict of interest as I've not done anything wrong." Umbridge laughs squeakily making Mikayla and McGonagall cringe, Mikayla looked away from the toad back at her head of house. "Your parentage will effect your admittance to the Ministry." Mikayla looked at her Professor like she had no idea what she was talking about, "how so?" She played dumb she could see a hint of a smile on McGonagall's face. "Your father is-" "innocent as Peter Pettigrew is alive and staged his own death whilst also killing all those Muggles. But since you have decided not to believe the truth about the return of a certain wizard, you are forcing my father into hiding." Umbridge scoffed, "lies." Mikayla shook her head, "and as for my mother, she was the Head of the Spell Damage Department in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. And she didn't get that job because her parents were good pure-blood people, she got that job because she reached the requirements and sat a good interview." Mikayla stood up from her seat gathering her things. "Professor thank you for all the help, if I think of any more questions, I will come and find you." Mikayla walked to the door, smiled at McGonagall and sent Umbridge a death glare before leaving the room. She saw that Neville Longbottom was next. "Good luck Neville, just a warning Umbridge is in there." Neville thanked her, "oh and if you need any help with subjects let me know." Neville smiled thanking her again. Mikayla rushed off to the kitchens to get a quick snack and check in on her elf friends, all of which were delighted to see the blonde.
