Chapter Forty-four: You're not being fashionably late with what you're wearing

"I can see you." I told the unrecognizable figure.

I had just stepped out of my house and was about to enter the car when I saw movement in the plants. The person still didn't come out as I said that.

"I said I can see you, which means you should come out now."

No movement. Maybe I'm being paranoid. Maybe I'm just seeing things. I unlocked the car door and was about to enter when I saw the person about an inch closer to a car behind mine from the side mirror. Now that I noticed, it wasn't a familiar car.

I turned around sharply, the person didn't notice, so he froze by the car door, looking like he was caught in the act.

Huh?

"Jayden?"

He smiled weirdly and waved. He took a step closer and I took one back.

His brows creased. "Are you afraid of me?"

Well your brother tried to kidnap me, so yes.

I ignored his question and asked my own. "Are you following me?"

He kept his gaze steady. "You didn't answer my question." He took another step to me and I took one back. "You're afraid of me, aren't you? Why?"

Why? Why?!!

Maybe because you have an uncanny resemblance with your brother who tried to kidnap me!!!

"Why not? For starters, you're following me."

He looked around. "For a good reason."

"And what reason is that?"

He didn't reply. "How old are you?"

"How old are you?"

"Are you always going to reply my question with a question?" He asked, obviously frustrated.

"Are you ever going to stop asking questions and reply mine?"

He sent me a small smile. "I'm 20."

"How old is your brother?"

"25."

"And what do the both of you want from me?" I snapped.

"I don't want anything from you."

"So you're here because?"

"My brother wants you." I hid my shudder. "And have you come to get me? Because I have 911 on speed dial."

"And we both know why you haven't pressed it."

Because that'll get them to find out I'm Avery. God!

Why does that matter? You're being utterly stupid.

I opened my car, eager to enter and drive off as far as I can.

"I'm not here to get you."

I stopped and turned back to him. "Then what do you want?"

He knotted his hands together and looked down at them. "Jaxon left home earlier this year to find his way without us, his family. He's always had his..." he tried to find the words, "problems. We don't know what it is and we never found out because he doesn't think anything's wrong with him, so when he left we let him be."

And I thought I was being mean calling him a maniac.

"Then he came back a few weeks ago and seemed worse than ever. He was frantic and so closed up and I never found out what he came back for. So I followed him here. Not followed him, followed him, but came with him. I've been with him for a while and so he's become more open to me. First, all he talked about was a girl named Avery and I didn't understand why he was so obsessed with her. Then he comes back home one day, bruised and angry, but at the same time he looked shocked. He ranted about how she was with someone, and how her boyfriend just attacked him for talking to her."
