Written by - khushi_sri

Nestled atop the Malwa Plateau and surrounded by lush greenery, Mandu is a small town which greets all it's tourists with open arms. Climbing up the slope, you get lost in it's beauty, while your mind is clouded with the innumerable questions about it's history. Listed below is the history of this small and peaceful town, the various attractions there and the best time to visit the place.

History

Miyan Bayezid Baaz Bahadur, the last independent Sultan of Malwa, fell in love with a Shepherd's daughter named Roopmati. Roopmati was a staunch believer in Lord Shiva and considered the River Narmada as her mother. Gifted with a beautiful voice, she was a good singer. Once when the Sultan was out with his aide, he chanced upon her singing. And then started the epic tale of love between a Sultan and a Shepherdess.

Baz Bahadur proposed marriage to Roopmati, but she declined it saying that she can't worship the River Narmada from there, as she worshipped her each day without fail and ate anything only after that. So determined to marry his love at any cost, Baz Bahadur made efforts to change the course of the river and finally got successful in building the Rewa Kund, and finally got married to his love. But their happy days were short lived, for the Mughals had started invading the whole of India, and now their eyes were on the Malwa plateau region.

The Mughal Army General Adham Khan laid seize over the small kingdom of Mandu and comparatively small in number, the Mandu army was defeated. Lured by the beauty of Rani Roopmati, Adham Khan, proposed marriage to her, while Baz Bahadur fled to Khandesh to get help from his allies. To escape his clutches, the Rani ate a paan laced with a venomous concoction, and thus came to an end a beautiful story of love.

Some attractions in the town

The Rani Roopmati Pavilion- It served more as an army observation post. However, it was also the romantic retreat of the Queen and from where she could gaze at the River below. Built on the southern slope beyond the Baz Bahadur Mahal, it has undergone various stages of construction over the centuries.

Lohani Caves- One of the historical landmarks in the town, it is the place from where people can take in the majestic view of the sunsets. Several excavations and archaeological findings have unearthed various Hindu structures and carvings of Lord Shiva, Parvati Vishnu and Lakshmi.

Honshangshah ka maqbara- Built of marble and one of the most famous attractions in the town, it is a visual treat to the tourists. Even Shah Jahan was so smitten by it's beauty that he sent his four craftsmen to meet the architects who built it.
