Introduction:

Sleep Paralysis is neither a disease, nor a phobia. It is simply a state of life, where while waking up or going to bed, you just feel that someone is sitting on your chest. You feel difficulty in breathing or to properly do anything. It is like a temporary paralysis, that happens while going in or coming out of sleep. It generally lasts for a couple of minutes to an hour.

When you go to sleep and you get this, then it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.

When you are waking up and you fell this then it is called hypnopompic or postdormital sleep paralysis.

Causes:

This is generally noticed around the teen years. It can also be hereditary.

Other Causes are: •Lack of sleep.
Improper sleep schedule affects mental conditions and results in stress or bipolar disorder.

•Sleeping on the back. Research shows that sleeping on the back can be linked to increased risk of sleep paralysis.

•Sleep problems such as, narcolepsy or nighttime leg cramps.

•Use of certain medications, such as those for ADHD.

•Drug/medication abuse.

How is it Diagnosed?:

If you are unable to move or speak for a few seconds or minutes when falling asleep or waking up, then you have isolated recurrent sleep paralysis. If in case this prolongs, and you are very anxious about your symptoms or this condition leaves you very tired and cause you to turn insomniac then, visit a doctor and get right medications.

When you visit a doctor, The doctor may ask you to elaborate on your symptoms or ask you to maintain a sleeping diary.
In a sleeping diary, you note down when you go to bed, what happens when you go to sleep or come out of sleep and the number of minutes or seconds it lasted.

Generally the time is estimated, it does not have to be exact.

Treatment:

Improve sleep habits,such as making sure that you get six to eight hours of sleep each night
Using antidepressant medication, if it is prescribed to help regulate sleep cycles.

Treating other mental health problems that may contribute to sleep paralysis, such as narcolepsy or leg cramps.

The Fear generally people have and how to tackle it:

Generally people have the fear that something is wrong with them mentally because they are feeling like this but it is not true, this all can be tackled simply by sleeping more and reducing stress.

Stress can be reduced by:
•Yoga
•Meditation
•Music
•Dance

For some people, Sleep music also helps. Sleep music is available on youtube, spotify, wynk, Gaana, so around everywhere. There are many people who suffer from sleeping Paralysis and it is not uncommon at all.

All you need to remember that is sleeping paralysis is not a disease, it is a condition, it comes and goes.
