Indian Legion presents to you Voice of The Wild, an...
Being an Indian, You must have heard this not once, not twice but million times in your life. But since when these colours started to become gender specific? If by any chance a boy likes pink or a girl hates pink, they are welcomed by these comments.
'Why are you wearing pink, are you a girl?'
'What? Being a girl you don't like pink?'
'Pink is not for you, Boy. You should take blue.'
'You are kidding me if you are saying that you are a girl and you don't like pink.'
Ok! So now colours will define our gender ?
When a boy is born, all blue decorations are done with superhero, superman realated themes but when a girl is born, usually all pink decoration is done with fairies, angel related themes.
As soon as the child is born, they are exposed to this, that boys and girls are different which makes them believe that they are NOT EQUAL.
When we have to gift a girl some toy, we usually go for dolls, kitchen sets but when it comes to boys, we usually goes for cars and guns.
This way we shape their thoughts that girls are supposed to do household chores while men are superior who will drive cars, will fight with guns.
"Rishu, why are you playing with this doll? You play with this car." His mother's voice rang in his ears
"but why Mumma? I like this doll." His innocence spoke up who was all unaware of this
"This is for girls. Boys play with this car. You are a boy, right". He took that car and threw away the doll with which he was enjoying a while ago.
Today, we all talk about gender equality but has anybody thought from where this inequality has arised?
We feed this in the mind of the children at a very young age that what are they supposed to like and what not, what are they supposed to play with and what not, what are they supposed to do and what not. We create these differences between a boy and a girl.
"Priya, why are you playing with this gun. Girls don't play with these". The little girl who was playing blissfully heard her brother saying this
"but why Rishubhaiya. I want to play with it". The girl spoke who was not willing to give her toy.
"Mumma has told me that girls play with these kitchen sets. These are made for you. Take it" Saying this Rishu went from there leaving her sister cry.
Children are like WET CLAY whom we can shape in whichever way we want.
These things might look small but they play a major role in shaping a child's thought process and when these children grow up, they go on creating bigger differences between girls and boys.
"Maya, why are you playing cricket. Don't you know that it's a boy's sport." A 12 year old girl comes and speak.
"But why Priya, I have fun playing cricket." Maya spoke up.
"Then everyone would call you a boy. Girls can't play this game. Come, we will play ghar-ghar". And with this Priya took away Maya with her.
I want to say to all the people reading this, that don't tell these kids which colour they should choose just because they are a BOY/GIRL. Let them choose on their own. Don't tell these kids with what they should play or not just because they are a BOY/GIRL. Let them enjoy playing with whatever they like. Don't tell any kid what they should do and what not just because they are a BOY/GIRL. Let them do what they like.
If any girls doesn't like pink or doesn't like to play with dolls and kitchen sets, then that's perfectly fine because they don't need to. If a boy likes pink or to play with dolls, then there's nothing girly in that.
Cooking is not just a girl's thing when even boys have that food. Cricket or any other sports is not just a boy's thing when even girls are capable of playing that.
'Who said that blue is for boys and pink is for girls? Break the stereotypes and create your own colour.'
