♠️Benevolent Sexism♠️
Written by - not-so-subtleNisha was in her cubicle ,a cup of coffee, with her friend Rohan they were having a mini celebration after she got promotion for her hard work .
" Nisha, for a women your are too ambitious " Rohan says smiling.
Even though that was a compliment but to nisha it felt like an attack on her on her hardwork
Leaving her upset and with a question - is it wrong to be ambitious ,to dream big to work hard?.
We are familiar with situation like these, where women are made guilty of their choices.
Even though these remarks are great to hear, it often causes a feeling of unease, particularly when one is trying to draw attention towards her work rather than on her appearance.
Benevolent sexism :- Reflects the evaluation of the society seemingly positive. Idolizing women as home maker, wife and child caretaker, Romanticizing women as an object of heterosexual affection, and a belief that men's duty is to protect them.
When a man at fifty, successful in their careers, take care for his family are praised by society but on contrary if a woman taking those roles, it often opens the gate of snide remarks with question of what and why's.
Women are conditioned to buy benevolent sexism in two ways:-
Firstly, it makes them feel pampered, flattered. Compliment like beauty with brains often tempt them into thinking their sex and social status as one that garners advantage turning them blind towards discrimination. They in no way see themselves subjugated of patriarchal oppression.
Secondly, fear of repercussions that women are timely made aware of when their reaction to sugar coated sexism are taken as overreaction or leads to a disagreement in public places.
Furthermore, it pits one women who buy benevolent sexism against who defy gender roles in the society.
'The good girl' where good in itself is decided by patriarchy.
By endorsing women as overly compassionate non assertive, poor decision maker and are only good as administrative assistant, these statements condition women in undermining their own competence.
According to a report for Harvard Business school's Gender and Work conference, countries with more benevolent sexists belief tend to have more cases of overt, hostile sexism.
Additionally, places where people hold more benevolent sexists beliefs promote fewer women in government and business leadership roles.
Awareness is like sun, when it shines on things, they are transformed.
Avoid starting sentences with " Women are..." Because an immediate generalisation about women does not do any good.
Try to avoid making comments on their "famine qualities" Such as being organised, compassionate, caring.
Instead compliment them on their ability as a leader, their problem solving abilities or something specific.
Offer help without calling them 'fragile' 'weak' 'dependent'.
Stop calling them bossy, bitch Or difficult to deal with.
Love and Hugs
