Feminism is the belief in social, economic, and political equality of everyone. Many mistake this, and think that feminism is only about women and their rights. But it is not so. It is about all sexes and their equality.
As we have seen in the past, women were confined in their homes to look after the domestic chores whereas work and public life was reserved for men. Women were denied the right to own property. They had to cover their heads and even their faces, for it was believed that outside men should not see a women from a different household. And it's not just that. A man had the right to even sell his wife.
How brutal is that?
Even by the 20th century in some countries, women could not hold the political office or get the right to vote. They were prevented from conducting businesses. Moreover, women did not have access to education.
In some parts of the world, the situation continues today too.
"Are you a feminist?" Someone might ask you. Most people do one of the following: Either readily say "yes" or grimace and call it as a "man-hating-movement"
Even many women today do not realize that equality is still to be achieved...
In a time of 30 years, we will look back and realize that the #MeToo movement was a crucial point on the feminism timeline. It will be recognized as a necessary step on the way to equality.
We must stand up, raise our voices, but we must never let them tell us that we have gone too far.
