By improving health, and empowering women, population growth comes down.

Living in India, one of the major issues for Indians is the increasing population and disparity in sex ratio. However, this issue levitates when we talk about the union territory, Daman and Diu. With a total population of 243,247 in 2011 and a remarkable growth rate of 53.76%, this state has packed areas with 2191 people per square kilometre.

This territory is on the western side of India near the coasts of Gujarat. It was colonized by the Portuguese and one of the states which gained its freedom in 1974, along with Goa. Being the smallest Indian union territory, we sometimes miss its major facts such as the religious beliefs, massive difference in sex ratio, population growth rate, literacy rate, economy.

Most of the population of this place follows Hinduism, with a percentage of 90.5% people belonging to this religion. People following Islam follow this group, making up 7.92% people of this religion. Other religions too can be found in a small ratio but what you need to focus on is the lack of diversity evident through the number of people following a certain religion.

According to the census of 2011, the sex ratio of Daman and Diu was 618 females for every 1000 males. Talking about Daman only, the number plunged further to 533 and is considered the lowest ratio throughout the country.

This low tally is quite disturbing because the literacy rate of Daman and Diu is 87.1%, which is more than the average literacy rate of India (74,04%). These statistics show nothing but the fact that "literacy'' and "education" are two different things.

For a better understanding, let's classify the population into urban and rural sections. The situation of the rural areas of Daman and Diu are better than their urban counterparts. Not only is the sex ratio of rural areas at 864 far better than that of urban areas, which has an alarming figure of 551, but the overall literacy is also better.

In comparison, the literacy rate of rural areas is 3.43% for males and 60.96% for females while it is 92.10% for males and 42.50% for females in urban areas. The urban literacy data of this territory is yet again highlighting gender inequality prevailing not only in this area but throughout the world.

According to an interview of Mohammed Abid, Chief Executive Officer of Daman and Diu, another major variable of the situation is migratory labour. Being a highly industrialized union territory, this state receives an ample amount of immigrant labourers throughout the year from different parts of the country, especially from Bihar, UP, Orissa, and West Bengal.
