- BelalugosiNight, for some to sleep but for some to wander in this veil of darkness waiting for their prey to get trap in their web. The people of the dark, the roamers of the dark, the vampires. Yes vampires, the creatures who live on blood, the creatures who suck the blood of human beings also known as blood suckers. They roam at night, attacks their prey and feed on their blood.
But now the question arises do vampires exist?
Are they still alive?
If they're alive, then where are they?
Various studies shows the existence the vampires in today's century. According to the modern science they were recently found in New Orleans under the name of "vampire community". People there live on blood but they don't harm people, only suck the blood of volunteers. But from where this whole vampire thing started? Where was it originated?
The origin of vampires can't be certain because various mythologies have their own theories and myths, every country see this from a different perspective. In Romania, a myth started that Vlad Dracula was a vampire since his favourite way of killing his enemies was stabbing them a wooden stake through their heart and also he enjoyed dinning amidst of his dying victims and dipping bread in their blood. Whether this myth was true or not is still unknown but they surely give huge popularity to books of Dracula and the various movies which have been produced like "The Twilight Saga", a remarkable hit in the movie industry. Where as if we talk about middle aged, it was considered as an plague to be spread throughout the people of the village. The disease often left behind bleeding mouth lesions on its victims, which to the uneducated was a sure sign of vampirism. Many researchers have identified it as porphyria, a blood disorder that can cause blisters on the skin when exposed to sunlight, thus linking it to the vampire legend.
The theories of origin of vampire isn't finished yet. The most important theory was originated in greek mythology where a boy named Ambrogio, an italian man who travelled to greece to hear the prophecy made by an oracle in the temple in Delphi who said only three sentences "The curse, the moon , the blood will run". Amidst this he met a beautiful lady there named Selena with whom he fall in love and decided to get married, but their destiny turned out to be cruel. Amrogio was cursed by God of sun Apollo due to his liking towards Selene, saying his skin would be burned if he ever touched sunlight. In order to fight this curse he reached Goddess of moon Artemis, whom he made happy by killing swans as a tribute but soon the Artemis found out about his true intentions which made her furious but still she took pity on him and allow him to take his silver bow which was the main deal of between him and Hades, the god of underworld, but on one condition that he'll never touch his lover i.e. would remain virgin all their life. Ambrogio left with no choice agreed to this and they spent their entire life without touching each other but atleast they were happy to remain beside each other. Many years passed away Selene started to grew old but Amrogio was immortal as his soul still reside with Hades, and once again he pleased Artemis and requested her to make Selene immortal. As a result he was allowed to touched her only for once in order to suck blood from her neck and when he did, the soul of Selene become free and took a form of bright light becoming the Goddess of moonlight. Like this she would visit him every night and her children which were immortal due to their immortal blood starting the generation of vampires.
But what about in Hindu mythology? Are there any signs of such creatures there? The answer is yes!
In hindu folklore, the vetala is an evil spirit who haunts the cemeteries and takes demonic possession of corpses. They make their displeasure by troubling humans. They can drive people mad, kill children, and cause miscarriages, but also guard villages. They are the hostile spirits trapped in the 'twilight zone' between life and death. They can be rid off by finishing their funeral rites in a proper manner or can be repelled by chanting of mantras. Since unaffected by the knowledge of space and time, they have an uncanny knowledge of past, present and future and a deep insight into human nature. There is also a strong Vetala cult in the Konkan region, under the names of Betal, Vetal, etc. Since Shri Betal is said to be the brother of Shri Shantadurga. Therefore, wherever a temple of Shantadurga is, there will be a temple dedicated in honour of Shri Betal either within the temple complex of Shri Shantadurga or somewhere in the sylvan surroundings.. It seems, however, that the relation between the literary Vetala and this demigod's is feeble at best. In today's culture a famous show about this was also telecast named Vikram Aur Betaal , thus making it popular in 21st century.
Finally marking the end of the never ending list of vampire theories!
Whether its a myth or a reality, it all depends on how we see it.
Love and hugs
