"Independence "- the word which means freedom holds a great importance in Indian history. After being ruled by the for more than 200 years, few people understood what freedom meant and how it was the need of essence during that period. Under imperial rule, people had grown accustomed to be a slave and bow down their head. But only few revolutionists denied to obey the Britishers and revolted against them. Soon, the idea of freedom got implanted in everyone's mind and they too demanded freedom. This led to the struggle of independence.

But whenever we speak about independence who is the first person that comes in our mind? Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, right? Does any women freedom fighters come to our mind? If yes, then I'm sure they are Rani Lakshmi Bai, Sarojini Naidu, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Annie Besant, Sucheta Kriplani etc. But are we aware of the countless women who lead the freedom of struggle without demanding fame?

The tale of independence without mentioning the heroic deeds of women would always remain incomplete. Women of that period were not only confided to home, they came on streets, revolted,got beaten and some even got arrested but their passion never broke.  They sacrificed their family, their life and everything just for the sake of our motherland.

Here, are few women and their life story which will definitely reverberate your heart.

Begum Royeka:- Born in Rangpur, (now in Bangladesh) Begum Royeka is one of the earliest freedom fighters, who resisted the gender discrimination and faught for freedom. She was a prolific writer who always emphasised the importance of education and gender equality in her works. She used her pen as a sword and was the ambassador of women's right and education. She taught women the need to raise voice against oppression.

Captain Laxmi Sehgal:- Born in Malabar, Laxmi Sehgal was a doctor,social activist,freedom fighter and a great woman. She was the epitome of being an ideal woman. She was greatly influenced by Subash Chandra Bose. She led the Rani jhansi Regiment, the first women contingents of the world. Captain Laxmi Sehgal strongly opposed caste system and once asked a tribal girl to hold her hand and play with her. She's  awarded Padma Vibhusan for het great contribution to the society.

Ammu Swaminathan:- Born in Palakkad, Ammukutty Swaminathan was an Indian social worker, political activist and the member of Constituent Assembly of India. She got married at the tender age of 13 after her father's death. She bravely stood against the Britishers. She was also the prominent figure associated with Quit India Movement and was imprisoned for a year in Vellore jail.

Rukmini Laksmipathi:- Born in Madras, Rukmini was the first women prisoner in Salt Satyagraha movement. She was the secretary of Bharat Stree Mahamandal and was the first woman minister of Legislative Assembly and was appointed as Deputy Speaker. Rukmimi worked for upliftment of women's education policy.

Rani Gaidiliu:- Born in Manipur, Gaidiliu was a woman of strong morals who worked for the revival of her Naga Tribal Religion. She faught against Britishers right at the age of 17 and was sentenced to imprisonment for fourteen years. Her growing popularity threatened the Britishers and they launched a manhunt for her. She was awarded with Padma Bhusan for her tremendous efforts.
