Written by- khushi_sri

As the name suggests, it is the cancer of the breasts. It is characterized by an uncontrolled growth of cells, which leads to the formation of lumps within the breasts. Most commonly, cancer develops in the breasts in the cells lining the milk ducts and lobules that supply milk to these ducts. Women in the age group of 50 to 74 are at high risk of developing this cancer, but now a days even the younger lot is at risk

As per WHO (World Health Organization), it is by far the most common type of cancer among women, in both developed and developing nations. It claims over a million lives worldwide each year, all due to the lack of awareness about the signs and symptoms of the disease. Women are more prone to be diagnosed with this cancer than men and all it needs to prevent deaths occurring because of breast cancer is to raise awareness about it.

Every year, October is marked as the awareness month of breast cancer, to help increase the attention and support for awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

In an article published by cytecare.com, Kerela is the state with the highest number of deaths caused by breast cancer in India, while Belgium is the country with the highest breast cancer incidence in the world. But it is just the cases that are diagnosed and the tip of the iceberg. Many cases remain undetected and untreated, and at the end, people get to know about this only at the last stage, often times leading to a fatal end. But if detected early, this cancer is very much treatable like many other diseases.
