Now believe it or not this medical syndrome feels like something out of a storybook but its very much real. Hypertrichosis or commonly known as werewolf syndrome is a rare and curious condition that cause excessive hair growth anywhere on person's body.
Since its a rare condition, research done on syndrome is very limited and numerous theories exist to justify them.
Congenital hypertrichosis may run in the family. Theory says it has something to do with genes which stimulate hair growth to become abnormally active. End results is the person with this syndrome might have similar resemblance to our early ancestors.
Another fact about this is that in people with congenital hypertrichosis, these genes are activated in the womb. There is still no known cause for this yet.
There exists another type of hypertrichosis- the Acquired type. People who develop this syndrome maybe later in life. This can be due to the following causes-
• Malnutrition
• from poor diet or eating disorders like anorexia nervosa
• drugs
• cancer and cell mutation
• skin diseases
• Also people with skin sensitive to UV rays might trigger hypertrichosis to occur
Now for the symptoms of hypertrichosis, its primary symptom is the presence of hair in greater amounts than usual for a person's age, race and sex. Hair appearing in unusual areas like the face and other body parts.
The severity of hypertrichosis symptoms may increase or decrease with age.
But one thing is for sure, scientists and archeologists have developed a theory that maybe these gene mutations could to be linked directly to our primary ancestors- the apes. After all, every Homosapien reading about this is evolved from apes.
I hope I was able to give an insightful review of this rare yet interesting medical syndrome.
