"I wonder who's going to be there this weekend?" Ricky asked, looking out the window as the Uber sailed down the freeway headed away from O'Hare Airport and towards the campus of Northern Illinois University. Andrew knitted his brows as he looked over at his dark haired friend. "Well aside from all the guys on our text chain, I'm not sure, to be honest. But it'll be great to just be out of L.A. for a while," the redhead said wryly, and Ricky nodded. "Yeah, and around 'normal' people for a change."
The two childhood friends were headed to a reunion weekend at their college, part of the homecoming festivities. Andrew and Ricky had been fraternity brothers at school, and then they'd lived together when they'd first moved to Los Angeles, but besides each other, they barely got to see their other college friends much anymore. Andrew had been itching to get out of California pretty much since Christmas, and he had persuaded Ricky to join him on the trip, although the singer was sort of hesitant to leave his girlfriend Jess for too long. Ricky was in the throes of new love, but Andrew was ready to bail on the months of drama and controversy and enjoy some low key time hanging with his "real friends."
"Blake says there are a bunch of things planned, but I'm mostly interested in going to the game and then hanging out with the guys," Andrew said, and Ricky nodded in agreement. The guys' best friend Blake still lived in DeKalb and was a PhD student at the school. He and his wife Rebecca were the unofficial organizers for the reunion weekend, and Andrew and Ricky were excited to stay with them and catch up with Blake.
The Uber pulled up to a ranch-style home in a neighborhood in walking distance to campus, and Andrew and Ricky thanked their driver, hopping out of the car and grabbing their bags as they took in the house. "Man," Ricky said, looking around at the adorable neighborhood where their friend lived with his wife. "This is nice. We can't buy a cardboard box in Los Angeles," he said, rolling his eyes. Andrew shook his head a little, thinking of L.A. and everything that came with the high-end city. He laughed a little, as he'd been pretty annoyed with everything about Hollywood since he'd had his fallout with Shane a few months ago.
"Maybe we should move back to DeKalb. You could use your cut from the makeup and buy a mansion," Ricky said with a laugh, and Andrew couldn't help but chuckle.
"Can you guarantee me that I'll find a nice girl to marry me if I move here?" Andrew joked back, and Ricky shrugged. "I have the feeling there'd be plenty of takers," Ricky said with a silly grin as they knocked on Blake's door, smiling widely as his wife Rebecca opened the door with a huge grin on her pretty face.
"Andrew! Ricky! Welcome home boys!" the pretty brunette girl said, opening her arms wide to greet both guys, and they chuckled a little as they both embraced her at the same time. Rebecca had been Blake's girlfriend since pretty much the first day of college, and she was essentially like a sister. She grinned as she looked them both over. "My two favorite Cali boys! Come on in, guys, get out of the cold!" she said sweetly, ushering them into the house and calling for Blake that his friends had arrived.
A few minutes later, the tall sandy-haired guy rushed down the stairs, his thin wire-framed glasses perched firmly on his nose. "Hey guys! Sorry, I was grading papers," he exclaimed, pulling Andrew into a bear hug before slapping Ricky on the back kindly. Blake was a PhD candidate in Political Science and was teaching a course at the university as he finished his dissertation. "Hey buddy!" Andrew said in his soft-spoken voice. "Or should we call you Prof?" he teased, and Ricky giggled.
"Are you gonna be able to go out and drink with us like old times, or are you afraid to run into your students?" Ricky asked with a laugh, and Blake grinned, shaking his head a little. "Nah! I'm ready to tear it up this weekend!" he said, pumping his fist, and Rebecca laughed out loud. "He normally is worried about seeing the kids out, but he's been prepping for this weekend forever!" she said sweetly. "There are too many old friends coming in town to play it safe," Blake added.
