"Where have you been this whole week?" Garrett shrieked in his generally loud voice as Andrew slumped into his spot on the couch in the tiny house, ready to start recording their pod cast. The redhead pulled the sleeves of his red Champion sweatshirt over his hands and nervously tugged on the brim of his black L.A. Dodgers baseball hat. He looked up at Garrett with raised eyebrows, fidgeting slightly.
"What do you mean? I've been here the whole time?" He asked with a sly shrug. Garrett narrowed his eyes, giving his best friend a skeptical look. "The hell you have! We usually hang out every night, but the past five nights in a row, you've been completely MIA," the tall lanky man declared, and Andrew scratched his jaw nervously. "Well, I just... you know, I've just been catching up with some stuff at home," the redhead protested. "You know, Garrett, I do have other things going on outside of my friendship with you," he added with a roll of his eyes, and Garrett snorted.
"Yeah, I know you do, but let's be honest, we've been hanging out nonstop for the last several months. You can't blame me for wondering if you're cheating on me with another best friend," Garrett teased. "I mean, I know you have Y/N too. Is she in first spot again?" Garrett asked innocently, and Andrew's breath hitched. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice jittery, and Garrett shrugged. "I'm just teasing brother, chill," Garrett said, watching as Andrew raked a hand through his messy red waves.
Y/N was Andrew's best female friend. The gorgeous raven-haired pediatric nurse had been in the friend group with Andrew and Garrett since they'd moved to Los Angeles. She'd actually been in the group longer than they had, as she'd gone to high school with Scotty Sire and Todd and lived in the apartment complex with their mutual friends Carly and Erin before either Andrew or Garrett had moved in. Y/N and Andrew had been best friends since pretty much the day they met, and Garrett constantly joked about the competition he had with Y/N over who was Andrew's number one friend. Andrew generally thought it was funny, if not a little bit ridiculous, but that day, Garrett's constant ribbing about Y/N and his observations about Andrew's absence were hitting Andrew a little bit too close.
The truth was, Andrew had been absent. He'd been MIA for the past week, pretty much ignoring everyone's calls and texts, and he'd been completely silent on Instagram and Twitter, even more than usual. As he casually watched Garrett fiddling with his headphones to prepare to record the podcast, he thought to himself. He was torn between wanting to remain completely silent and avoid Garrett's questions and wanting to shout from the rooftops about what he'd been up to.
A week ago, Andrew had gone over to Y/N's apartment after she'd called him in a panic. On her way home from her night shift at the hospital where she worked, a random guy had started to follow her in her car, trailing her all the way into her neighborhood. She was understandably rattled, and while she'd lost the guy and gotten safely into her townhouse, she was still freaking out as she sat alone in her house, and she'd called Andrew and begged him to come over. He had rushed over at the speed of light, basically running into the house and enveloping her immediately in his arms as she cried. After she'd calmed down, Andrew started to think through everything. Before he knew it, he started to pour out all of his thoughts and feelings to her, and it had changed everything.
The thing was, Andrew had been in love with Y/N for years, and he'd silently pined away for her forever, never telling anyone how he felt about his female BFF. He hadn't really ever planned to, sure she didn't feel the same about him, and he was worried that telling her he loved her would ruin the friendship that he treasured more than anything in the world. But after hearing about her scary experience, he was overtaken with a mixture of love for her and panic over her safety. He immediately started thinking about what it would be like if he never saw her again. What if something more serious had happened to her and he hadn't been able to tell her how he felt about her? In that moment, something came over him, and he felt like he had to spill his guts to her.
