Andrew and Y/N had been best friends for about three years, since they lived next door to each other at the apartment complex where they both lived when they moved to L.A. Andrew came from Illinois the same month that Y/N moved from Michigan, and they started hanging out each day on their front balconies, drinking, talking and laughing with Carly and Erin, Andrew's friends Ricky and Caleb, and Y/N's roommate Amy. After a while, Andrew moved to an apartment by himself and started working with Shane. Meanwhile, Y/N started a medical residency at UCLA, and she moved to Westwood. The two remained the best of friends, always platonic, and though they had less time to just hang out and waste time together, they still made time for each other.
Y/N was everything Andrew would want in a girl. She was brilliant, kind and absolutely beautiful. She had been his friend throughout his year-long relationship with Gabbie, supporting him when he had decided enough was enough with her, and again when Gabbie tried to get back together with him after he'd ended things with her. He had been interested in Y/N as more than a friend before he got together with Gabbie, and he suspected she may feel the same about him, as they spent more time together, flirting, cuddling and talking constantly. But then Gabbie pursued him so hard that he sort of fell into the relationship with her. By the time he was finally rid of her for good, Y/N had moved on, dating someone in her medical school class. The cycle started again, with Andrew supporting Y/N during the relationship and comforting her after her ex cheated on her with his female roommate. After everything they'd been through, they were so far into their friendship that it never went further than that.
During the first year of Y/N's residency, she was so busy that she didn't date at all. Andrew was busy too, working with Shane day and night as they took Shane's channel from good to the best. Y/N would hang out with Andrew and the Squad at times, and the gang loved the pretty doctor. Shane and Ryland thought Andrew should take the friendship to the next level, as Y/N was superior to any of the girls he'd casually dated since they'd known the handsome red-head. They were constantly encouraging him to take the leap and ask her out or at least to tell her he liked her and see what she said. But he was hesitant. He couldn't deny that he still had feelings for his beautiful blonde friend, but he felt he'd missed her chance with her.
One day, he was working at Shane's when Y/N texted him, telling him she had a break from work. It had been a few weeks since they'd had time to hang out in person, and Andrew asked her to come visit him at Shane's and have lunch with the gang. She was excited to see everyone and told him she'd be there. Andrew turned to Shane, engrossed in his laptop with his headphones pulled over his ears, and he tapped his friend on the shoulder. "Hey, Shane, I invited Y/N over to hang out for lunch, she has a break from the hospital. That's fine huh?" Andrew asked, and Shane's face lit up. "Yes! I love Dr. Y/N! She's the best!" Shane cheered as the two bounded down the stairs. They met up with Ryland and Morgan downstairs and discussed what to order for lunch, and Andrew told the others that Y/N was joining them.
"So are you ever going to ask her out Andrew or what?" Ryland asked curiously, scratching his temple. "She's literally the best girl you know, what's your deal?" Andrew blushed a deep crimson, scratching his neck nervously. "Aw, I don't know, I don't think she's really into me like that." Shane raised his eyebrows, looking at his red-headed friend with skepticism. "I don't see how you would know that, you've never even made a move. Are you not into her like that?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows. "I don't know, I mean, we're good friends. Why ruin a good thing?" Andrew argued, shrugging his shoulders. Morgan cleared her throat a little bit, biting her lip. "So if you aren't interested in Y/N, are you interested in dating someone else?" she asked the nervous cameraman, and he looked at her questioningly. "Why Morg, are you offering yourself?" Shane asked, giggling away. "NO! But my friend Elise is constantly talking about how hot you are, so maybe I'd set you up with her if you really want to date someone."
