Shane sat quietly on the couch, watching YouTube videos of Eugenia Cooney intently. He was preparing to shoot the interview he had planned with Eugenia, the YouTube star who disappeared from sight after years of speculation that she suffered from anorexia, and he was thrilled that she had trusted him to help her make a comeback on video. Shane had a soft spot in his heart for people with food issues, and he'd personally suffered from anorexia, bulimia and body dysmorphia for years. He still struggled with body issues, even as he had hit the height of success, professionally as his partnership with Andrew had his channel soaring and personally, with his engagement to Ryland bringing him happiness he never thought possible. As he watched carefully, jotting down notes on different videos to ask his psychologist friend Kati about and to ask Eugenia herself, Andrew popped in the front door and quickly came over to join Shane on the couch.
"You've been binge-watching her videos too Shane?" the red-headed cameraman asked, readjusting the bill of his L.A. Dodgers baseball hat. Shane looked up, acknowledging Andrew with a little wave and nodding his head slightly. "I can't stop, it's fascinating," Shane said, and Andrew agreed. "I have to admit, Shane, my knowledge about this stuff is pretty limited, but I'm finding myself just drawn to the videos and to her. Like, it's so sad," Andrew said, his voice soft, and Shane looked at him with a genuine smile. "Maybe this will help you understand me better, buddy," Shane said, chewing a bit on his bottom lip as Andrew nodded. "Yeah, definitely," the red-head said genuinely to his boss.
Andrew loved his best friend, and he was the most supportive friend and colleague Shane could have ever asked for. But Andrew had to admit that, up until he had become close with Shane, he'd never quite understood the depths of anxiety and depression, and he'd become so much more aware of those things since his friendship with Shane had blossomed. He hoped he could get the same handle on eating disorders and body issues, as he wanted to be a source of support for his red-headed boss, and he knew this was something Shane struggled with.
The boys continued to watch Eugenia's channel intently, occasionally gasping at the site of her rail-thin frame or sighing out at the horrible comments she got on her livestreams regarding her appearance. They watched drama channels and entertainment sources talk about her disappearance, and then they switched to Kati's channel, listening and making notes as she discussed the warning signs of eating disorders, as well as treatment options. After a while, Shane went to the door to welcome Kati, as she had come over to discuss the project with the guys to prepare them for their trip to Eugenia's tomorrow. As Andrew filmed, Shane fired questions at Kati, and Andrew couldn't help but pay close attention as Kati listed the dos and don'ts of speaking to someone in recovery. Andrew thought Kati was brilliant, having always enjoyed her content since she'd worked with the duo on the Jake Paul series. Andrew had graduated from college with a Psychology degree, and though he was super-creative, he always had an interest in mental health and the science behind the disorders.
After Kati left, Shane and Andrew exchanged notes, mapping out the plans for the interview the following day. As they sat at the dining room table, Ryland and Morgan came into the kitchen. "Hey guys!" Morgan shrieked at the boys, sitting down with them as Ryland pulled out a LeCroix from the fridge. "Still prepping for the interview tomorrow, huh guys?" Ryland asked, taking a sip of his drink and standing next to the table, patting Shane on the shoulder. "Yeah, we've been at this for hours, but I want to get this right so badly," Shane said quietly, looking up from his laptop. Morgan sighed a little. "I feel so sad for Eugenia. Like, what do you guys think really happened to her? Do you think she really got help? Is she better?" Her pretty blue eyes darted from Shane to Andrew as she pushed some hair behind her ear. "I was always such a fan of her." Andrew nodded a little. "It's just crazy to me because I can't imagine the motivation behind someone like her, so pretty and sweet, but it's like she can't see it." Shane nodded knowingly. "That's the thing, Andrew, no matter how much everyone tells you that you look great or whatever, you're just always in your own head."
