"So Y/N's flight will get in around 7. Nancy and Doug are SO grateful that you're having her stay with you dear," Andrew's mother Lynn said as the redhead paced around the room at his apartment. "Yeah, it's fine mom. But I mean, she's like 24 years old. She's not a child. Why can't she stay at a hotel again?" he asked softly, and on the other end of the line, Lynn groaned.
"Andrew! Nancy's nervous about her traveling to L.A. You'll understand better when you're a parent. You have no idea how nervous I was when you moved out to California, but I guess I felt like I couldn't tell you anything. With Y/N, they just feel so much better knowing she's with you," Lynn said simply. Andrew rolled his eyes a little, shaking his head.
"OK, well, I'll go grab her from LAX and let her stay with me. But like, I have stuff to do. I'm not gonna follow her around all weekend to make sure she stays out of trouble," he insisted, and Lynn sighed. "Andrew... why can't you be a little more gracious? I'd think you'd be happy to have a hometown friend come to visit." Andrew let out a dry chuckle. "I wouldn't exactly call Y/N a friend. More like 'annoying cheerleader mean girl who my parents force me to be nice to," he answered. "Andrew! I don't think it's much to ask. I know sometimes Y/N can be a little bit... self-assured... but she's a sweet girl and Nancy is my best friend in the world. Can you try and be nice? Just for me?" she asked, and Andrew sighed again.
"Yeah mom. I'll be nice for you," he said quietly, hanging up the phone. He glanced up, eyeing Garrett and his other friend Adam, who were sitting in his living room playing video games on Andrew's PlayStation.
"Whoa! 'Cheerleader mean girl' huh? This Y/N sounds like she's going to be a real peach to have around," Adam said with a laugh, and Andrew rolled his eyes.
Y/N was the daughter of Andrew's mother's best friend Nancy. She was four years Andrew's junior and they'd grown up together, as their mothers were pretty much inseparable. The families had gone on vacations together, gathered each weekend for barbecues, and they frequently planned events and get togethers. Though the two families did everything together, Y/N and Andrew were never what you'd call 'close.' In fact, growing up, they couldn't stand each other.
Andrew thought Y/N was self-absorbed, catty and he'd never thought she was all that intelligent. The girl had been drop-dead gorgeous since she was a toddler, and everyone in their small Illinois town took notice. Y/N knew it too, and Andrew saw right through her sugary sweet exterior. She always used her looks to get away with murder. She was the stereotypical popular cheerleader, always intent on fitting in with the cool crowd, and Andrew thought she gave off major Regina George vibes. Because he was so much older than her, Andrew was often put in charge of her when their parents would go out together, and she drove him crazy, giggling with her friends, teasing him about girls or scheming on how to sneak out or break the rules.
For her part, Y/N thought Andrew was boring, judgey, and a total nerd. In school she didn't see him as anything but the geeky big brother type that her parents forced her to hang out with. In high school he played sports and dated girls in his class, but Y/N still thought he was totally uncool, and she couldn't stand when her parents would put him in charge of her. He would never let her have any fun. When he came home from college, she'd beg him to buy her alcohol or bring her to cool parties and he'd always refuse. It annoyed him to no end how his college fraternity brothers constantly talked about how hot she was too. They had no clue what a bitchy mean girl she could be.
"So why is your former baby-sitting charge coming to L.A. anyway?" Garrett asked, and Andrew rolled his eyes. "I wasn't her baby-sitter. I mean, not really. I'd just have to, like, stay with her and stuff to make sure she didn't get arrested," he explained with a groan. "I'm honestly not exactly sure why she's coming. Something about an interview? I don't know, I didn't really ask. She's probably trying to be like an Instagram model or something. She's not the sharpest knife in the drawer," he added, and Adam raised an eyebrow.
