Shane and Andrew had the perfect working relationship. When Garrett introduced the two, they started with Shane emailing footage to Andrew, and he would edit at his house and send it back. That went on for a few months, but as Shane opened up to Andrew, he started to want the introverted red-head around. He started having Andrew come to his house to film, and then he started traveling with the Squad, filming their adventures. As the two got closer and closer, both personally and professionally, it was rare to see one without the other. They became attached at the hip, and Andrew got used to Shane's strange working habits.

At first, Shane wanted Team Dawson to be professional. Garrett was working with the duo as well, and Shane rented the office for the three to use for work. But then Morgan moved to Los Angeles and started living in the office; Garrett worked with the others less and less; and most importantly, as Shane and Andrew's projects got bigger and more ambitious, Shane started hibernating at his house more and more. Andrew, at the time 26 years old, newly single after getting out of a year-long relationship, and focusing as much as possible on his career, was as easy-going as could be about work. If Shane wanted him to work at their house, Andrew would go with no complaints. Shane couldn't believe his good fortune that he'd found someone as relaxed and low-maintenance as Andrew. And as the two went from work partners to best friends, Andrew started to realize that Shane's happiness and self-confidence stemmed from his ability to be at home, in his "sanctuary," near Ryland and his animals and away from things which caused him anxiety. With that, Shane's house became a 24-hour editing space for the budding documentary filmmakers to create.

When Shane and Ryland moved to their huge house in Calabasas, the guys' work habits intensified. They no longer lived in Hollywood, and it took Andrew longer to drive from his Hollywood Hills apartment to Shane's place. Shane started to encourage him to stay overnight, and for a while, that was fine with Andrew. Staying at his house allowed Shane to spend time with Ryland and to also work, and Andrew was totally fine to hang out and relax at the house. But then Y/N came along.

Shortly after his 27th birthday, Andrew met Y/N at a club in Hollywood, when he was out celebrating his friend EJ's birthday. Y/N owned a fancy children's clothing boutique in Hollywood, the kind of place where Hollywood celebs would spend $200 on onesies for their babies or buy their tweens tiny-sized designer shoes. A native of L.A., Y/N was at the club for a bachelorette party, and she and Andrew locked eyes at the bar and chatted all night. Andrew was the sweetest guy Y/N had met in forever, and as he was completely smitten with the gorgeous raven-haired store-owner with the beautiful smile. After dating for six months, the two were inseparable. All of a sudden, Andrew was no longer content to hang out at Shane's at all hours of the day. He wanted to spend every free second with Y/N, and while she was understanding of his work, she definitely wouldn't be content to let days goodbye without spending quality time with her adorable ginger boyfriend.

Shane and Andrew were hard at work on the Jeffree series, and their old work habits were dying hard, with the boys spending hours working together in the "war room," and not sleeping all that much. Ryland would insist that Shane would spend a few hours with him each night, pulling his man upstairs around 9 pm to watch TV and decompress, and when Ryland would inevitably fall asleep each night around 11, Shane would want to come back to Andrew and continue working through the night. This had always been their pattern, but now Andrew was feeling depressed. The short two-hour timeframe wasn't long enough for him to go home and see Y/N, but he knew the duo had so much work to do to get the multiple-episode series posted in a timely manner, and he couldn't figure out how to break away from Calabasas long enough to get some much-needed quality time with his girl.

Ryland noticed this one evening as he ordered Postmates for the guys for dinner. Andrew seemed sad and depressed, and Ryland started to feel guilty. He got to hang out with Shane while Andrew let his personal life suffer, and that night, as he and Shane hung out in their room, binge-watching the Crown while Andrew wistfully Facetimed with Y/N downstairs, Ryland decided to bring it up with Shane.
