David had already proved what he can do for the Lord.
√ He defeated Goliath and give all the credit to God (1 Samuel 17:1-58).
√ He kept his hands pure from blood shed even though King Saul kept on chasing him to kill him. (1 Samuel 19:4; 1 Samuel 24:10)
√ He always consulted to God vefore doing anything. (1 Samuel 30:8; 1 Samuel 23:2; 2 Samuel 2:1; Samuel 5:19)
√ He brought back the Ark of God to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:10:15)Now, he is trying to prove what he can do for others.
The Bible said in Matthew 25:40, "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me."
Let's read in 2 Samuel 9:1-13
v1 And David said, "Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"
v2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, "Are you Ziba?" And he said, "I am your servant."
v3 And the king said, "Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show kthe kindness of God to him?" Ziba said to the king, "There is still a son of lJonathan; he is crippled in his feet."
v4 The king said to him, "Where is he?" And Ziba said to the king, "He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar."
v5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.
v6 And nMephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, "Mephibosheth!" And he answered, "Behold, I am your servant."
v7 And David said to him, "Do not fear, ifor I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and oyou shall eat at my table always."
v8 And he paid homage and said, "What is your servant, that you should show regard for pa dead dog such as I?"
v9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master's grandson
v10 And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master's grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master's grandson shall always eat at my table." Now Ziba had fiteen sons and twenty servants.
v11 Then Ziba said to the king, "According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do." So Mephibosheth ate at David's table, like one of the king's sons.
v12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants.
v13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet.
You know what's amazing? David wanted to do something good for others and he began with the family of his enemy.
Did you know? During the days of these age, in the time of David, it was customary for the king of a new dynasty to completely execute anyone who are blood-related to the former dynasty.
But David went against this custom. He didn't do any revenge or went through the principle of self-preservation.
In the verse 1, David mentioned the reason why he is asking if any person left in the house of Saul-that he nay show kindness for Jonathan's sake. This shows that David didn't forgot his covenant of Jonathan.
