Several weeks later, late March, 1996. Mayte is at her first appointment.
RECEPTIONIST: (pokes her head out) Mrs. Nelson?
MAYTE: Oh shoot! That's me! (goes back with her)
756: INT. EXAMINATION ROOM DAY
DOCTOR: (begins the examination) Well Mrs. Nelson, I've calculated your due date, you're due November 6th.
MAYTE: Hey, that's a week before my birthday! And that confirms my suspicion that I got pregnant on my wedding night!
DOCTOR: Congratulations! Well, I see no reasons to worry. You're twenty- two. Healthy. Blood work looks fine. Next time I see you, we might be able to hear a heartbeat.
MAYTE: (smiles brightly) Really? That's great! Thank you so much!
DOCTOR: You're very welcome.
MAYTE: (leaves)
757: INT. CAR DAY
Later...
MAYTE: (driving) (sees a pet store) (to herself) "I don't know what compelled me to do it, but on the way home, I impulsively stopped off at a pet store."
758: INT. PET STORE DAY
MAYTE: (walks in and looks around) (finds a puppy and smiles before buying it) (to herself) "I purchased a puppy: a little female Yorkie."
759: INT. PAISLEY PARK (LIVING ROOM) DAY
Later...
MAYTE: (comes in) Honey, I'm home!
PRINCE: Hey baby. (kisses her) (notices the puppy) You got a dog?
MAYTE: Yeah! I don't know why, I was driving home and I felt compelled to stop at the pet store.
PRINCE: What's her name?
MAYTE: (thinks) (to herself) "I was trying to decided what to name her, then I had an idea. Prince had a way of putting me into a sort of hypnotic state, well, more of a meditation. So I suggested to my husband..." You should put me under and ask.
PRINCE: Ok. (starts lovingly stroking her face and whispers in her ear) Clear your mind, just relax... What's the name of our puppy?
MAYTE: (closes her eyes) (to herself) "He stroked my face and whispered me into that deep, meditative space..."
A little while later...
MAYTE: (wakes up)
PRINCE: You said her name is Mia.
MAYTE: (smiles) Of course. That means mine.
