Damon, Nyssa, Stefan, and Elena all met in front of the tomb the next morning to try and get some answers.
Damon shoved the tomb door away allowing light to penetrate the dark cave-like holding cell.
"Anyone awake in there?" He called out.
Katherine came to the opening looking none too pleased.
"You alone?" he asked.
"No, she's not," a voice behind her said as Elijah came to the opening as well.
"Guess you were telling the truth for once," Damon said to Katherine.
Elijah noticed Elena, "you must be the human doppelganger I've been hearing so much about."
Stefan stood a little in front of her not liking Elijah looking at her.
The original turned to Stefan, "and you are Stefan Salvatore. Strange I had heard you were a vampire but that seems to not be the case... and yet it is for your brother who was turned some time ago."
"Yeah super fascinating," Damon says drawing the attention back to him, "so we have a few questions."
"As do I, namely do you have any idea how much trouble you are all putting yourselves in holding me here like some trapped animal. I will get out and it won't be pleasant for any of you," Elijah tells them.
"The kind of unpleasantness that might be on par with your human sister being sacrificed?" Nyssa sarcastically asks before adding, "you'll be staying where you are."
"And what about me?" Katherine asks.
"What about you?" Nyssa asks.
"Do I get a check-out time or am I staying indefinitely?"
"That depends on Elijah," Elena says stepping forward.
"What are you talking about?" Katherine asks itching to be very far from the original as soon as possible.
Elena turns to Elijah, "we know about the sun and the moon curse, we know how Katherine got out of it when you tried to sacrifice her, I can't do that. I'm pregnant. It was confirmed this morning. And I'm not running either. So what do we need to do to end this once and for all?"
Elijah was not prepared to find out the human was pregnant that definitely made things more complicated.
He sighed and took a step back trying to think of a solution.
"What Katarina doesn't know is that I had procured for her a potion back then for her to take before the sacrifice that would see her resurrected. I still have it and would be willing to let Ms. Gabbard have it."
"Gabbard?" Elena asks
"That's my last name or was before I was adopted, hers is Gilbert," Nyssa explains to Elijah.
"I see my apologies, I didn't realize."
"What about the baby, I can't imagine taking a potion and then dying would be too healthy for a fetus," Elena asks.
"No, I suppose you are right," Elijah admits.
"Which brings me back to my earlier point," Nyssa says, "I'm calling bullshit on the whole sun moon thing. What is this sacrifice really for? Why have you been trying so hard to do this for over 500 years?"
"While I don't approve of your vocabulary you do have a keen intellect," Elijah tells her before continuing to explain, "the sun and moon curse was a decoy set in place throughout history by my brother Niklaus and I so all in the supernatural community would be out looking for the ingredients. We thought it would give us a better chance at success."
"Success for what?" Stefan asks.
"My brother was originally a hybrid, part werewolf part vampire but his werewolf side was taken away, this ritual would unbind it making him the creature he has always desired to be," Elijah explains.
Everyone is stunned by the news not knowing what to say or ask next so Elijah continues on.
"It is because of my brother that I have made some very questionable choices as Ms. Gabbard you so tactfully alluded to the other night. However, he has recently done something unforgivable and I now wish to see him... eliminated."
"So you and baby bro had a row and now you want to use this whole sun moon mumbo jumbo to lure him here? And you really think you're gonna be able to kill him? 'Cause Stefan and I have had some pretty epic fights over the years but neither one of us has been able to take that final step," Damon says.
"This is more serious than any petty disagreement between siblings. He has to be stopped and I am the only one who can do it,"
"Yeah with my sister's blood which isn't going to happen. I mean we staked you and you're fine if your brother is like you how do you even imagine you could kill him?" Nyssa asks.
"Originals can only be killed by the wood from the white oak tree used in the spell to create vampires, once we learned that my siblings and I burned it. However, if we lure Niklaus here with the ritual there will be a moment when he is in transition where he will be at his weakest, it is then I will tear out his heart killing him," Elijah explains.
"Great, thanks now that we know we just have to weaken and remove the heart of an original in order to be rid of them that makes the future look much brighter," Nyssa says.
"It is not an easy thing to accomplish, he'd never let you get close enough," Elijah warns.
"The way you didn't? Because you were pretty easily staked by 3 people supposedly nowhere near as powerful as one of the great originals," Damon says.
"A rare moment that won't be repeated," Elijah replies hating that these amateurs did in fact outmaneuver him.
"Wait, you said siblings, how many do you have?" Elena asks.
"I had 4 still living until recently now I am down to the one responsible for their deaths," Elijah tells her.
"That definitely explains some things," she says.
"Yup, really makes our family look like the freaking Brady Bunch, huh Stefan?" Damon quips.
Getting overwhelmed with everything Elena speaks next offering a suggestion to the problem, "I say we just leave our two biggest problems in here and call it a day, maybe they can annoy each other to death."
"I'm afraid that won't take care of your biggest problem," Elijah says
"Trevor and Rose Marie put out a lot of feelers to reach me with the information they had it has no doubt also gotten back to Niklaus or very shortly will. He will come looking for you and when he does I will be your best chance at defending yourselves."
"So your brother needs a human doppelganger and will be lured here with the promise of one and you need a human doppelganger to sacrifice even temporarily in order to kill your brother, do I have that right?" Nyssa asks.
"That is the situation," Elijah says confirming her summary of the facts.
"Well I think I know where we might find a spare," she says looking to Katherine.
"What?!"
"Sorry, truly I am. But if Elijah is telling the truth you'll survive it. Elena's baby won't," Nyssa tells her.
"Katarina is not human," Elijah says pointing out the obvious.
"No, but she can be," Nyssa says correcting him.
