Neil: To.. Papa foreign services me the.. Aur mumma housemaker thi, par unhe poetry aur singing ka bohot shok tha.. She had huge talent, I swear.

He smiled to himself.

Neil: Bohot innocent thi, kisi ko kuch nahi bolti thi, sweet si, silent si.. Kabhi kisi ke baare me bura na sochti thi, na bolti thi.. She loved me the most in her life, and I used to be most dependent on her, for everything.

Mini: Tum?? Dependent??

Neil: Hamesha se thodi na aise mature aur independent tha.. Jo bhi bolte honge, you know, best childhood, I had that.. But only until that childhood lasted (his smile faded)

She held his hand, and he smiled.

Neil: I was a single child na, to kaafi pampered tha, aur kuch hadh tak spoilt bhi..

Mini: 😧

Neil: Aise mat dekho Mini madam, sach hai.. I was too pampered, itna ki mumma ke bina kahi bahar jaane ke liye kapde tak nahi rakh paata tha mai (he grinned) Mumma hamesha raat ko ya kabhi vo free ho, to apni kisi book me poems likh rahi hoti thi.. And her voice, trust me aisa lagta tha ki I'm in another world, vohi mere liye hamesha lori bhi gaati thi, her voice reflected how she was Mini.. So pure and so enchanting.. Isiliye jab uss din tum lori gaa rahi thi, I got emotional.. Itne saalo baad, I felt I was listening to her only..

She smiled

Mini: Aur tumhare papa?

Neil: Papa.. If I have to describe him in word, he was a perfectionist. Hamesha har cheez perfect honi chahiye, and especially when it comes to work, no compromise!!

Mini: That sounds familiar!!

Neil: 😁 Par hamesha se mai aisa nahi tha.. I grew up mostly too pampered, and I became really dependent for my age, isiliye Delhi me hi hote hue bhi, I stayed in the college hostel.. Vahi pe I made quite a few friends, usse pehle I usually didn't have many friends.. Vahi pe I met Meera, who was a really close friend.. You know, they say an introvert and extrovert make really good friends, humara bhi vahi case tha.. Mai chup chap rehta tha, par ye.. Oh God!! Chapad chapad karti rehti thi hamesha!! But then, bohot din bhi nahi hue the hostel gaye hue, and... A single call turned my world upside down..

Mini's eyes became moist, remembering the day she was in the same situation.

Neil: You know, I was 18 but still a child only.. Ab aisa thodi na hota hai ki 17 saal tak bachha hai 18 ka ho gaya to bada ho gaya!! Par, that day!! Mai ghar gaya, and I saw all my relatives there.. Sabhi!!

Mini: Tumhare family...

Neil: I wouldn't call them family Mini.. They were just relatives, just bound by blood!! Family to vo hoti hai, jo hamesha hume support kare, they make us feel own, par waha, that wasn't the case.. No one walked up to me and told.. 'Neil hum hai tumhare saath'.. Kisi ne mujhe uss time pe support nahi kiya.. No one was there to tell me that everything is going to be alright!! When times are like that, even though we know that everything is going to be fine, we need someone's assurance, we need support!! Kisi ko samajh hi nahi aa raha tha ki my life had changed!! In a hall full of people, in that situation of misery, I realised, ki I have no one but myself.. No one is there for me but myself.. If I have something with me, then it's the values my parents gave me, the faith I have in myself and the supreme, and the ray of hope which I should never let go of in my life...

There were a few moments of silence. She wiped his tears. 

Neil: Itna jaante hue bhi na Mini, it was really difficult to handle myself. College ke time pe I kept myself busy, I made myself numb.. But when I was alone, and reality hit me, it just used to be too much to handle.. I'd lost the warmth, the love in my life after my parents. Whenever I had to console myself, mumma ki baatein yaad karke (pointing towards the krishna idol) usko apne paas rakh leta tha.. Vo..

Mini: Tumhare mom ne diya tha.. Right??

Neil nodded..

Neil: Tumhe kaise.. (he paused) Meera!!

Mini: How did you...

Neil: Sirf usko hi to pata tha.. Aur vo bhi zabardasti bulvaya mujhse..

Mini: Ha to tum ziddi hi itne ho to kya karti bechari??

Neil: Oh hello!! Bechara mai hu, vo nahi!! 

Mini: Tumne kisi se contact kyu nahi rakha?? Meera se bhi kyu nahi??

Neil: Vo bas college ke baad chut gaya!! Aur vaise bhi, Meera wasn't too proud of me.. you know??

Mini: Isha se shadi??

He nodded.

Mini: I know.. Jab pehli baar ghar aayi thi tabhi bol diya tha na usne to!!

Neil: Oh yeah!! But turns out she was right!! 

Mini grinned

Mini: Kabhi to kisi ki baat sun liya karo Neil Oberoi!! We girls are always right!!

Neil: 🙄

Mini: What?? Do you disagree??

Neil: No!! Mujhe apni jaan pyari hai!! Hamesha to spiderwoman banti ghumti ho..

Mini: Abhi se itna complain kar rahe ho?? Yaad rahe, ki shadi hone wali hai mujhse!!

Neil: Aajkal badi shadi shadi kar rahi ho!! Kyu?? (whispers in her ears) Itni jaldi hai kya??

Mini: Nahi to!! Vo to tum shadi karna chahte the na, isiliye mai bhi maan gayi!!

Neil: Mai??

Mini: Kyu?? Nahi karna tha??

Neil: Oh God!! Spare me please!! 

Mini: Ab ye natak band karo, and go sleep!!

Neil: huh??

Mini: Aur tum restaurant kyu nahi gaye ha?? Aise bina bataye kon chutti leta hai?? Yaad rakho tum abhi bhi Patiala babes ki head chef ho, aur mai tumhari boss!! Ab kaha gayi tumhara professionalism?? Bulna mat.. ki...

Neil: Nahi bhulunga.. Mini Madam!!

He smirked and walked out of the room 😏

Mini: Idiot kahi ka!!

Neil (from outside): Hitler kahi ki!!

Mini: Go!!

Neil: I'm going.. Jaa raha hu.. I'm gone!!

She giggled at his antics and he too went into his room to sleep, smiling. 

Two days later 🌅

Neil: Mini.. Meera.. Tum log late karaoge yaar!!

Meera: Tu kahi nahi aa raha!!

Neil: Ye konsi baat hui??

Mini: Ab yehi baat hai!!

Meera: Aur vaise bhi, humari shopping pe tum kya karoge?? Aur last time ka to saaab yaad hai mujhe!! Preet humare saath aa rahi hai, aur tu ghar pe ruk!!

Neil: Nahi!!

Mini glared at him.

Neil: Matlab.. Mai ghar pe nahi rahunga kyuki.. Mujhe to restaurant jaana hai na!!

The girls giggled, and went out, leaving him sulking. Neil left to the restaurant, and got busy with the damage control there, while the girls shopped. A month later was the day of mehndi..
