The event was going on smoothly— at least, for now. I couldn't help but stay on edge although Sean had told me to relax and stuff, I just wasn't able to.
"Are you okay?" Lea's voice cut my thoughts short, "you look a bit pale."
"No, no," I waved her off, taking a sip of my wine, "I'm fine."
"Rough night?" She asked with a small smirk tugging at her lips which made my eyes widen a little before I nodded, clearing my throat as I didn't know what else to say, "something like that."
Lea and I were standing near the bar and talking about random stuff since we were both bored. Sean and Enzo were sitting at a table, talking and laughing about stuff and apparently we weren't welcomed in their conversation. Dicks.
"These two and Alessio are inseparable although they haven't known each other since forever," Lea informed randomly, a small smile playing at her lips as she stared at the two men, "it's admirable, really." Just then, her eyes fell on a group of people making their way towards us. I frowned just as I heard her mumble, "oh god."
"What?" I urged, "who are they?"
"Enzo's father's sister's family." She responded with a groan, "they suck," she whispered as they got closer, "—like level ten, no scratch that. Level hundred, suck." She poured another glass and handed it to me, "drink up, you're gonna need it." Shrugging, I drank the whole thing.
"Azalea!" A very loud voice exclaimed making Lea let out a string of curses under her breath. Was it that bad? "It's so good to see you! Is that a bump that I see? Oh mother of heaven! Are you expecting again?"
It was, in fact, that bad.
"What bump?" Lea asked with a frown as she looked down, patting her stomach, "I'm not expecting. Are you indirectly calling me fat?"
"No, no, dear!" The woman placed a hand to her mouth as if what Lea just asked her was absolutely absurd, "I would never!" The woman, herself, didn't exactly have the body of a model. She was rather huge, very tall— she-hulk-like. I felt like I was instantly cursed when her eyes landed on me, "and who might you be?"
"Nobody. I'm out of h—" I turned around to leave but Lea's hand grabbed my wrist and she pulled me back, "Francesca, meet Athena, Sean's girlfriend."
"Oh that boy has a girlfriend?" Francesco— sorry, ca, asked with her eyes wide opened. Was that a fuckin' crime? "You're pretty! How did he pull you?"
"I mean, Sean is very handsome, mom." A girl, who I didn't notice but she was standing behind the woman— of course I didn't see her. Francesca's body was hiding her. She walked from behind her to stand next to her mother, apparently and offered me a smile which I could tell was completely fake. Was she competition?
She wasn't even half as great as me. Was I even great? Help— my self confidence was really damn low.
"Yes but it is just sad that he rejected you, Cara." Francesca said with a look of sympathy as she stared at her daughter which made me snort but I quickly covered it with a cough. Motherfucker got rejected.
Lea let out a cough as well before she cleared her throat, "well, he has a type and apparently you're not it."
"But we looked so good together!" Cara whined, "he couldn't see how much I love him."
"You do realise that you're confessing your love for him in front of his girlfriend, right?" Lea asked with a look of confusion on her face. No, seriously, what was up with her?
"He brought me here last year," Cara said directly to me with a smile plastered on her lips as she ignored Lea's words. I nodded, shooting her look of indifference, "good for you."
She frowned, before taking a few steps closer to me and then she whispered in my ear, "and we fucked in the ladies room." Then she maintained a safe distance between us, a smirk playing at her lips.
"Oh wow," I mumbled, knowing damn well she was lying since Sean told me that Maria had a strict ‘no fucking in my events’ policy.
"It didn't feel real," she added in a poor attempt to add fuel to the fire. I rolled my eyes at that. Because it was.
"Remember the necklace he bought me?" Cara asked her mom with a grin earning a nod from her. Lea and I exchanged looks as she said, "you mean, the necklace you begged him to buy but he didn't? Yeah, okay."
"How about you stop lying?" I raised my brows at her, ignoring the look of surprise that took over her face, "this is getting really pathetic."
"What is getting really pathetic?" Sean's familiar voice filled my ears as he came to stand beside me, pouring himself a drink since Lea had gotten us a bottle from the bar.
"Apparently, you bought this girl here, a necklace last year." I began saying, watching as he continued to drink his wine, "and oh yeah, you fucked her in the ladies room as well."
"Wow," he muttered, placing his glass back on the table when he was done. He threw an arm around my shoulders as he looked at Cara with a fake smile, "lying's not gonna get you anywhere, sweetheart. Now can you two nuisances go away? I need to have a talk with my favourite girls in private."
Francesca let out a huff before she grabbed her daughter's hand and walked away. Annoying people.
"What is it?" Lea asked, turning to face Sean, her eyes holding seriousness. Business mode?
"Your son just drank wine." Sean informed making Lea's eyes widen, "excuse me?"
He shrugged, "does it count as drinking if he just shoved his tongue inside a glass to get a taste?"
"I don't think so," Lea muttered, her eyes going to the table where Nick was sitting on Enzo's lap, eating something. "Who had this horrible idea?"
"Not me," Sean was quick to say, shooting Lea a sheepish smile when she gave him a look. "What was the thing you wanted to talk about?"
"Right," he cleared his throat, narrowing his eyes at her as he asked, "have you ever noticed something weird with your mom?"
"I don't know. I've never really paid attention," she responded, a look of confusion and curiosity taking over her features, "why do you ask?"
"She's just really weird," Sean replied before grabbing my hand as he began to walk away from Lea, dragging me with, "all right, gotta go do something real quick. Great talk."
"Wait—" Lea cut herself off, shaking her head as she let out words I couldn't hear or make out from where I was.
"Where are we going?" I asked Sean as I allowed him to drag me to god knew where.
"Outside," he replied, "gotta tell you something."
