I head to Akali's room first thing in the morning to see if she is awake but I am stopped from entering the room. Standing at the entrance with crossed arms she smiles at me before asking.

"Long night?"

"I suppose."

She gestures for me to follow her, then pushes herself off of the wall headed to the hallway, "Need to talk about your obligations."

I glance at the door and then turn around to follow Evelynn through the hall in silence. She stays quiet until we leave the house, then hovering outside she leads me to the back of the garden where there is a small building where I assume they would hang out at night for a barbecue.

Sitting down on one of the seats, I take a seat across from her making sure I can watch the house.

"Unsatisfied?" I start.

"Not the reason you are out here, if anything I am plenty satisfied with the work you have been doing."

I cock my head. "Then if you'd let me ask my own questions before we get too far."

"I think you will get the answer you are looking for either way."

"I am not here for protection, am I?" She arches her brow and only nods slowly. "You can blame a lot of things on being blinded by your love for someone, but you must have realized that something is wrong... or you are just playing a game at this point."

She crosses her arms. "You are here to protect the five of us, are you not?"

"You asked to add the five of them."

"But did you adapt the contract for the five of them?"

I narrow my eyes. "You know who I am, don't you?"

"I don't know you personally, I don't know you from a previous interaction and I can confirm that the first time the two of us ever met was the day I contacted you to be hired to take care of the trash."

I focus on one subject for a moment.

"You had suspicions about the five of them?"

Crossing her legs, "I knew Hector for a while as I truly fell for him, he introduced me to his friends and his friends to my family. It just happened that everyone fell in love and in my weakness and passion I was lost."

"I just happened to notice that there is a past that the six of you share."

"Happened to notice is too convenient." I lift myself narrowing my gaze at her. "Who are you?"

"I honestly thought you'd have me figured out by now but your focus wasn't on me this entire time so I suppose it isn't all that surprising that you can't place names on the faces at this stage."

I hold my stare trying to make my own connections.

"Pathos."

She chuckles, "Pathos, or the appeal to emotion, means to persuade an audience by purposely evoking certain emotions to make them feel the way someone wants them to feel."

I shake my head slowly, "I don't get it. Pathos is working with their crime Syndicate."

She shakes her head. "I never worked with or for them. The same way your Agency has legends so exists legends in the underworld of crime, Pathos is just the name of someone that is supposed to be dead or retired."

I ask her, "Which is it supposed to be?"

"Whichever is more convenient."

The dead don't come back. The retired can always pick up the gun.

"Then explain to me why they use your name so often?"

"Convenience. How else would you scare away all the big bads from attacking your up-and-coming syndicate? Just drop a name nobody expects you to know and then they start wondering if the real Pathos decided it is time to wake up."

I cross my arms.

From the first message I received.

Miss me?

Pathos.

"The message that was handed to me at the restaurant, was that you?"

She nods. "I did my research on your Agency and how they like to operate so I tried to nudge you into trying to find me."

"If you really are Pathos why not kill them yourself?" I ask her.

"Why do that when I can get someone else to get their hands dirty?"

I counter. "Or maybe your hands are bound."

She lifts herself, "Sometimes the best course of action for everyone involved is the lack of a reaction to the events that have transpired," walking towards me she pulls out a card, the same one we use to cash our money in the Agency.

She slips it into my hand, "For the major crime committed." Wearing a smirk she whispers, "One down. Four more to go. Try to make it less painful on the girls."

She walks away from me.

I narrow my eyes at the situation before accepting it for what it is. It would make sense why there is so much talk about Pathos but nobody has anything to say about where this person is.

It is because they didn't know. Evelynn couldn't react to save the girls from them after realizing that she was caught up and blinded by her emotions because it would have been even more dangerous considering how possessive they are.

So that's why I am here. To dismantle everything they are, and kill them. It just happens that I was the best person for the job... a coincidence.

No. I think she knows a lot about the Agency and a lot more about the people working there... might have a contact in there that is feeding her information and that is how she found me.

I walk back to the building and head for Akali's room. Walking through the door she is laying on her side with her head towards the door, she looks up from the phone in her hand and instantly puts it down greeting me with a weak smile.

"I was wondering if you were ever going to make it a part of your job to come and check up on me."

"That would mean taking liberties," I walk up to her, and she scoots away from the edge to make some space.

I drop down in front of her, resting my hand on her shoulder. "A good work ethic is both good and unfortunate."

I shake my head, "I don't think ethics apply here," I let my smile fade, "how are you feeling?"

She shuts her eyes. "Sick to my stomach. Probably an hour or so from passing out again but I should be moving soon. I hope."

I state, "Just a little bit of bed rest."

She lifts her hand, interlacing her fingers with mine. "Thanks for saving me, probably the most scared I have been but... I was reaching out for you the entire time."

"I wasn't going to let you down."

"Part of the job?"

I chuckle as I ask her, "Never going to let me live that one down, are you?"

She smiles at me. "Only when this stops being a job."

"Not long now."
