The day of the summer ball arrived, Walburga and Orion had not spoken a word to Opal since her arrival, at breakfast that morning she swore Walburga was glaring at her when she wasn't looking."It's not something I've done is it?" she asked with uncertainty as she was fixing her hair, she had tried to make it straight but she was nervous she had to keep it curled. The worst thing about being a metamorphmagus.
"No, of course not. It's just my parents being my parents." Sirius said from his bathroom.
Opal bit the inside of her cheek nervously.
"Hey, stop worrying, Opal." Sirius said calmly, he walked into the bedroom tucking his tie into his waist coat.
She turned to face him and smiled, he was wearing traditional black dress robes.
"Oh, don't you look dashing."
"You look beautiful yourself." he said, looking at the long deep plum dress Opal was wearing.
"Amethyst let me borrow it." she said, she stood up straightening the dress.
Sirius held out his arm for her to link. "You ready?"
Opal nodded, taking his arm, they walked downstairs into the ballroom, by the window the curtains were drawn, an orchestra was playing by themselves, the giant chandelier above them was lit up brightly. It didn't seem as dark as it had the previous day.
She stayed by Sirius' side as he introduced her to his grandparents, she smiled saying hello but they were just as hostile as his parents. Sirius squeezed her hand reassuringly as she looked around the room, she saw the cold eyes of Walburga watching her, next to her was Rabastan Lestrange who was talking, she nodded and excused him, returning her eyes onto Opal.
There was a ring as Orion walked into the ballroom holding a champagne glass. "Would everyone make their way to the dining room where we shall have dinner."
Opal sat in between Sirius and Regulus as their food arrived. Opposite them sat Bellatrix and her new husband Rodolphus talking to an elderly lady. "Congratulations on your wedding my dear, keeping the bloodline pure, unlike your rogue sister."
"I would never marry anything less." Bellatrix said holding her husband's hand, her wide smile haunted Opal.
"Toujours pur."
"Toujours pur." Bellatrix repeated, solemnly.
Opal looked towards Sirius. "It means always pure." he whispered to her.
The dinner ended and the guests were led back into the ballroom where the music is still playing.
"Shall we dance?" Sirius asked, holding out his hand Opal took it, they walked into the middle of the ballroom.
"It's like the masquerade ball, but I know who you are." Opal laughed.
"I guarantee the song that we danced to won't be playing in this room, because that was a muggle song."
"Your mother wouldn't approve."
Sirius rolled his eyes. "She would not, speaking of my mother she has not taken her eyes off of you since we came downstairs."
Opal looked over at Walburga making eye contact.
"I think Lestrange said something to her." Opal said, tuning back to Sirius.
"The one that's married to my cousin?"
She shook her head. "Rabastan."
"Twat." Sirius said, he then pulled Opal over. "Ooh she's talking to my aunt Druella, let's get you out of her eyesight."
