The Christmas holidays had begun and every student was excited for the masquerade ball, except for one Gryffindor.

"I still don't have a date." James said, slumping on the sofa next to Opal.

"Moony will take you." she said, nudging Remus' arm.

"I am terribly sorry, but I will be going with my books, because they are far more interesting than Prongs."

James gasped hurtfully, clutching his hand to his heart.

"Remus, that's mean." Opal laughed.

"Hey Evans-" James said, his head hanging off the sofa as Lily walked past.

"Nope." She replied walking out of the common room.

"You know she's going with Snivellus." Opal said to James, he snapped his head around.

"What? No! Why him?" he sighed loudly. "Now I'm going to die all alone... no not alone, I'm taking my broomstick with me because I spent my birthday money on that."

"Awwh, you won't die alone." Opal said, then paused. "No I take that back, yeah you will."

"Blaze, you're so mean. You're supposed to be my wing woman."

"Are you only calling me that because of my surname?"

"...Yes, I have been waiting to make that joke for years."

Opal shook her head. "So Remus, you got a date?"

"Yup."

"What? Are you for real?" James moaned.

"December 24th."

"I'm done." Sirius said standing up.

"I thought you was Sir-"

"I'm leaving."

"-ius." Opal continued. "Anyways while you two bachelors are trying to find a date the day before the event, I am going somewhere quiet to finish my muggle studies homework."

She got up off the sofa grabbing a few pieces of Remus' parchment running away before he could hex her. She left heading down to the library, as she did she saw Lily sat under an old oak tree through the window.

"Hey Lils." Opal said, walking towards her trying to keep her hands warm as it was cold outside.

"Don't talk to me." Lily replied, stressfully. "I have to finish this essay, Slughorn set it just for me."

"Why are you stressing, the holidays have only just started." Opal said, tilting her head. "Also it is freezing out here, might help you concentrate more if you're inside in the warmth."

Lily nodded standing up, shivering. "Yeah, it would be better than out here."

"Come on, let's go to the kitchens before we go back and get some hot chocolate, the elves always make it nice during the holidays."

The two girls made their way to the kitchens then back up to the Gryffindor common room.

"Evans-"

"Potter, I swear to god if you ask me to go to the ball with you, I will throw this drink on you, and I asked them to make it extra hot." Lily said with little to no hesitation.

"I uh, was just um, going to uh. Just ask how you-" James stammered backing up slowly. "I'm going to bed."

They watched as he ran up the stairs quickly.

"Lily, you broke James." Peter laughed.
