The day had flown by quickly, with charms and spells being thrown in every direction. Makeup was all over the bedsheets, clothes and dresses sprawled out over the messy dorm room.

Mary had a little breakdown because she forgot she was a witch and couldn't fix her hair until Dorcas stepped in and helped her. But now the five girls were ready for the ball.

Opal looked in the giant mirror in the bathroom, straightening out her dress, her warm brown hair had been straightened as was long past her shoulders, she had to use a special hairspray so her hair wouldn't curl up because she was so nervous.

She picked up her red mask which sadly covered up the hours spent on her eyeshadow. She took a deep breath.

"You ready?" Dorcas said, walking in and smiling at her. "You look so good, please if you ever find out that you don't like men, I will be here waiting for you."
Opal laughed. "Anyone would think you have a crush on me."

"Yeah, Opal. I do."

"You better."

Opal looked at Dorcas' outfit, she had stuck to her promise and was wearing a dusky pink suit with a floral shirt, her hair had been braided with gold beads. Opal tilted her head, smirking at Dorcas. "I mean, if I weren't straight."

"Just give me a few months and we will be the couple of the school."

"Cas! Opal! We're leaving!"

"Our chariot awaits." Dorcas held out her arm for Opal to link, the two made their way out into the dorm where the other girls waited.

"Are you girls ready?" Marlene asked, getting Mary to tie the ribbon of her mask.

"Ooh wait, before we go down I want to get a picture of all of us." Lily said, rummaging through her trunk and pulling out a polaroid camera. "My parents got it for me from Diagon Alley as an early Christmas present."

She placed the camera up onto the window ledge pressing down a button then running back to the girls.

"Everyone say masquerade ball!"

"Masquerade ball!"

The camera flashed. "Ooh I can use a potion that can make the picture move." Lily said, picking up the camera. "I'll take it down with us so we can take pictures."

The girls made their way down to the common room. The boys had sent Opal a note saying that they were heading down early to get good seats... at a dance.

"Oh, Opal look." Marlene said, nudging Opal's elbow looking towards the fireplace where Duncan stood next to Fabian and Gideon. He grinned and started walking towards her.

"Be good kids, and don't do anything I wouldn't do!" Mary laughed walking away with the girls. "He is so fit," she whispered, but Opal was sure the entire common room heard her.

"Hey Opal, you look really nice." Duncan said, kissing her cheek.

She felt her cheeks go red but tried her best to cover them up.

"Shall we go down?" he asked, extending his arm out, the two walked down to the great hall, Opal gasped in amazement.

It looked magical, the long four tables had been removed to make room for a dancefloor, at the front of the hall the staff tables were replaced with four tall Christmas trees decorated in the house colours, in front of the trees was a stage where musical equipment for the band that was playing later that night. Sirius had told Opal that the band did covers of muggle songs and he was excited to hear new ones.

She looked up at the ceiling, which was enchanted to make it look like it was snowing, Professor Flitwick had charmed live fairies to fly above the students.
