I screamed. I threw all my hurt and pain, anger, fear and frustration behind that scream. I pulled back on the string just as an arrow from behind me streaked past. I let go and two arrows slammed into the face of the Griever.
I turned my head. Teresa was standing just behind me, lowering her bow. I caught her eye and she nodded.
"Come on. We can take them in the trees."
She turned and sprinted for the Deadheads. I followed without question. If there was one person I trusted to fight beside it was her, we had enough reason to fight and not be taken back. We wouldn't go down easily. We wanted out; out from the Maze, out from the watchful eye of the Designers and out from the control of The Handler.
We got to the tree line just as another Griever screamed and charged us. We slid behind trees to hide. I pressed my back up against the tree, trying to catch my breath. I slid a short fat knife out and held it slightly tilted so I could see the reflection. It wasn't a perfect mirror, but it helped. The Griever slowed down, taking slow menacing steps forwards, its head slowly looking side to side. Its beady black little eyes searching the shadowy forest line for something- or a someone. The Griever opened its mouth and let out a wild scream, showing off rows of razor sharp metal teeth.
I glanced up at Teresa, she had her back pressed against a tree a few feet away. Her body hidden in shadows, fires from the Glade flickered, casting eerie shadows. The sounds of Grievers screaming, boys screaming in fear and pain, structures breaking, everything faded to background noise in my ears.
Teresa pressed a finger to her lips and slowly slid another arrow out of her quiver. I sheathed the knife and did the same. Holding the arrow ready, now facing down in front of me. We made eye contact again and I nodded. Together we spun out from our hiding spot and let our arrows fly. They screamed through the air in unison and slammed into the back of the Grievers mouth. Even from here, and in the dark I could see the thing shirt circuit.
I spun away and climbed up the nearest tree. Perched in the tree, I could see the Glade.
"So much for Gally's warning." Teresa muttered bitterly.
She had climbed up and was standing beside me. Most of the buildings were destroyed. The crops were ripped apart and the field was on fire. The Bloodhouse was also on fire. I could feel the anger swelling. Ready to explode. I let a growl escape.
"No one fucks with my family."
I shouldered my bow for the moment and turned and started to leap from branch to branch. I saw two Grievers attacking the Council hall. Teresa was hot on my tail.
"If we can get close enough we can get it's attention away from the hall. Most of the guys are in there."
"I'm following you."
I nodded. And continued to climb through the trees. We got as close as we could. One Griever was circling the building the other was getting ready to jump. I slid my bow off.
"Are we getting it's attention or-"
"I'm going to destroy it. All of it. Until there's nothing left!" I snarled.
"Deal." She had pulled off her now and stood beside me in the trees.
I knew as soon as I released it they would know our location.
"We might have to shoot and run."
"Bring it on." I heard her whisper from the shadows.
"I knew I liked you." I grinned. "Savage sisters."
I heard her chuckle, but it was full of a savage malevolence. We pulled our bows back.
"Loose." I whispered.
