Travis' POV
It seemed to take forever for the car to weave its way through the bustling city of New York, but maybe that was just because I was on edge. It had been almost a month since Taylor and I had seen each other, and I knew she was in New York for a few days in-between shows. She loved surprises, so I hoped she'd love this one.
"Have a good day sir." The uber driver said as he pulled out upside Taylor's apartment.
"Thanks, you too." I nodded, scooting across seat and getting out, dragging my hastily packed bag with me. Closing the car door, I walked up the path and up the steps to the front door and knocked, smiling to myself as I waited. God, I'd missed her so much. I couldn't wait to have my girlfriend back in my arms where she belonged.
But a minute passed, and the door didn't open. I frowned, knocking again, a little louder. Maybe she was in the studio or something. But from what I could hear, the apartment was silent. I knew she'd be home; she'd told me all she was doing today was doing some work from her home studio and catching up on sleep before her event in two days. Knocking a third time, I started to doubt myself.
Then my phone rang in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see Taylor's adorable contact photo smiling at me from the screen. Swiping the green button across to answer her call, I held my phone to my ear.
"Hey baby." I murmured. "Where are you?"
"Where are you?" Taylor giggled nervously, and I frowned.
"I'm..." I glanced up at her apartment. "I'm in New York. At your place."
"Seriously?"
"Seriously. I wanted to surprise you. Why, where are you?" I asked.
"I'm in Kansas City." She giggled. "At your place."
"Oh you're shitting me." I sighed, and Taylor stifled another laugh. "Are you serious?"
"Uh huh." She told me. "I wanted to surprise you too."
"Oh my god." I murmured. "Well look how that worked out."
Of course we'd both done this. A month of being apart was hard for us, so I shouldn't have been surprised that Taylor had the exact same idea as me. But on the same day? Come on, the world was just fucking with us at this point.
"I just wanted to see you." Taylor said weakly.
"I know you did baby, I know you did." I sighed. "Me too. Look, I can probably get a flight to you soon and I can call Jason because he's got a spare key to my place and let you in." Taylor gave a longing sigh.
"Okay." She mumbled, seeming a little dejected about this whole situation.
"Hey." I said softly. "I think it's really sweet you went to surprise me. Unfortunately we just had the same idea at the same time. Now, I'll call Jason on my way back to the airport and he'll come let you in. You just make yourself comfortable, and I'll be there soon."
"Don't take too long." Taylor said miserably. "I miss you."
"I miss you too baby, and I'll be there as soon as I can." I reassured her. "I love you so much."
"I love you too." She whispered.
I hung up, quickly switching tabs to the Uber app and booking a ride back to the airport. Honestly, this whole situation was pretty ironic. It was so sweet that Taylor had done the same thing, but now I had to wait so much longer to see her. Surprises were all fun and games until both people in a relationship can't stand being away from each other.
"Hey man, what's up?" Jason answered when I called him from the car. "Thought you were busy with Taylor in New York."
"Yeah, change of plans." I told him. "She came to surprise me too, and she's at my place. I'm getting a flight back, but could you go let her in? You're the only one with a key." Jason laughed.
