"Happy birthday to me," you sing under your breath, "happy birthday to me," he sigh with sadness, "happy birthday dear Lova," you slowly drag out your name, "happy birthday to me."
You watch the wax on the candles as it gently drops onto the surface of your cake, hardening instantly as the flames continue to dance upwards and burn their way through the wick.
"I can't believe this," you mumble to yourself, dropping your head into your hands as you focus on not crying.
It's currently 1am, on the day after your birthday. Michael - your boyfriend - never showed up for the plans you both created. He never even called or texted you wishing you a happy birthday. It's like he didn't even care what day it was.
"Here's to another year," you groan, blowing all of the candles out, as they had started to extinguish themselves.
You pick the cake up, storming over to the bin, and dropping the contents of the plate into the bag. Who cares? The cake was just a charade for your birthday anyway.
Sniffling, you wipe under your eyes as you look around your empty house. He's been busy lately. Really busy. His days are packed full of meeting people or recording new things, he barely has time for you, even though he promises he would always make time. Today, his promise broke and it made you feel alone and forgotten.
Walking over to your room, you're stopped by the sound of keys in the door. The only person who has a set of keys to your house is Michael - and that's for emergencies.
"Hey, Lova, didn't think you'd still be awake," he softly says, keeping quiet because of the late time.
"It's 1am, what the hell are you doing?" You complain, and he looks at you in shock for a minute before explaining himself.
"I just thought that I hadn't seen my girl in a while and," he stops himself, looking around in confusion for a second, "why can I smell burning?"
"I don't know," you roll your eyes and cross your arms over your chest, you're going to make him feel guilty for forgetting you, "it could be the dinner I cooked you and forget to take out of the oven. Or, more likely it, it could be the candles on my birthday cake which you seemed to have forgotten about."
Realisation hits his face as his jaw drops and eyes widen. He truly forgot it was your birthday. This would be your 5th birthday since you've known him - your 2nd one as a couple - and he forgot it completely.
"Lova, I'm so sorry, I've had so much going on-"
"Save the crap, Michael," you state angrily through your tears, "and lock my door on your way out."
You march up the stairs before he can say anything else, your feet hitting the floor harshly as you make it to your room in tears.
You slam the door shut, climbing into your bed and laying against the headboard as you sob with your knees against your chest.
You hadn't even realised that your room door had opened - or that a certain blonde haired, apologetic boy has climbed in beside you - until he pulled you into his hold and let you cry onto him.
"Shh, I'm so sorry. I never wanted us to be this way," he softly says, rocking you both from side to side in a comforting motion to stop your tears, but it all hurts too much to know he actually forgot you.
"You forgot me," you sob a little harder, and you feel a droplet land against your hand as he cries with you.
"I know. I'm the shittiest boyfriend on the planet. I know it's not an excuse, but I've just been so busy recently, that I forgot all about the girl I love. I didn't mean to, I promise. I love you," he cries, holding you tighter against him as if he's afraid you're going to escape.
"I love you, too, but you're such a fucking idiot Michael."
"I am. I'm a complete fuck up. I'm sorry."
"Never forget my birthday again, asshole."
"I'll remember every birthday until we're both a hundred. Sound good?"
"Thank you."
