The rain was lashing down outside, I could see it practically bouncing off of the road from inside the house. The sky kept getting darker and darker, the street lights illuminating the road and the odd pair of head lights making their ways up and down kept grabbing my attention in the hopes Y/N was going to finally pull up outside, before the weather got any harsher.

We'd both been looking forward to tonight, our daughter Amelia had gone to stay at my parents' house so Y/N and I could have a date night. Married couples with a 2 year old need it every once in a while. By the time 7pm rolled around I decided to call her, in the hopes she would pick up if she wasn't already driving, which she should have been doing. Once I reach my phone I notice a missed call from an unknown number, not being able to call it back I flick through my contacts to find her name, before pressing the phone to my ear, chewing on my lower lip nervously waiting for her to accept the call. After several rings and countless "pick up, pick up" comments from me, the phone goes to voice mail. Letting out a sigh in frustration, I decide on standing back at the window looking out onto the street in the hopes of seeing my wife's car outside. With no such luck, I remain standing there, watching the trees blow in the wind and seeing the rain pour from the open sky above. I run a hand over my face in exasperation, when my phone goes off and startles me. I immediately make a grab for it, pressing it to my ear in a hurry to hear her voice through the speaker.

"Babe, where are you? Are you OK?" I begin rushing my words out before even letting her get a word in edge ways and instantly add "I'm still at home waiting, why didn't you answer my call? I've been worried-"

"Luke, sweetie, it's not Y/N" My mother's voice cuts me off, confused I pull away the phone to look at the screen, to see it is in fact her that's called me. "But that is why I'm calling" I furrow my brow in confusion and that is when I notice her muffled sobs over the phone, she's trying to prevent tears over something that's happened. Something involving Y/N. And that's when I begin to panic.

"What's happened? What's wrong?" I begin to raise my voice whilst repeating my questions to her in the hopes she will finally answer. "Answer me!" I've slowly begun to lose my temper and due to being worried sick about Y/N I can't help but lash out at her, even if I don't mean it. "I'm sorry mum, just, please tell me something, I'm going crazy, I need answers." My breathing has gotten heavier, almost as if I'll go into a panic attack at any minute now.

"Y/N, she's, she's in the hospital Luke. The weather caused her car to aqua plane, she spun out and hit a tree. She's in a bad condition, sweetie. We need to go down there." Her words come out stuttered, like she's trying her hardest to maintain a front but is failing, just like me.

"I-I'm on my way" By this point I'm gasping for air, struggling to get any oxygen into my lungs. My phone falls and clatters onto the ground, but right now it's not important. I need to leave and get to the hospital quickly. I grab my car keys, running out of the door without a coat and not locking the door behind me. I climb into the car, jamming the keys into the ignition, willing the car to start on the first try, which it does successfully.

I pull off of the drive and onto the road at a speed, not caring for other vehicles in my state of emergency. As I'm speeding off down the road is when I realise what an idiot I am, to be driving in this erratic state to go and see my wife who's in a critical condition from driving and bad weather. I smack my hand against the steering, wanting to go faster to be by her side but also not wanting to be in the hospital bed next to her.

I pull into the first spot I find in the hospital car park and make a dash towards the entrance of the Accident and Emergency building. I slam into the front of the reception desk, not having much time to stop and begin panting for air. The nurses look at me as if I've gone completely mental as I try uttering out words to get information on where she is, with no luck. I finally inhale a deep breath of oxygen before muttering "Hemmings" in the hopes that's enough information for them. By the looks on their faces, I'm going to take that as a yes. One nurse ushers me forward and points down a long corridor. I mutter a quiet "thanks" before making my way in the direction she pointed. I arrive outside of a room with a closed door, which has my parents sat outside on old, cushioned grey seats. They stand abruptly, my mum pulling me into a tight, warm embrace whilst my dad stands off to the side with a sombre expression on his face.

Before I can even begin to ask questions, a doctor slowly and quietly leaves the room that I'm guessing Y/N is in. His gaze immediately diverts to me, as I've begun making my way towards the door, in order to go through it and see my wife. He stops me by placing a strong hand on my shoulder, making me question what is happening. I look from him, to my parents, back to him again. Just looking into his eyes, I can see they hold nothing but darkness. Bleak, miserable darkness, no light shining through at all.

"No" I gasp out the word as if I don't want to believe it. I don't want to believe it. He hasn't actually said anything yet, so I won't believe it. "She's alive, right?"

"I'm sorry Mr. Hemmings but your wife had quite an impact when she crashed into the tree. Its better she passed now as opposed to suffering." He states in a professional yet caring tone to me. I repeatedly shake my head. It's not true. It can't be true. "I'm sorry, again" he adds at the end as if it's going to fucking change something.

"You're lying. You're fucking lying to me!" My disbelief has quickly turned into anger and I can feel someone restraining me from behind as I try pulling away to get through the door to see Y/N lying in bed, sleeping peacefully. Not dead. "She's not, she can't be" My words slowly lose their anger and I can feel hot tears pour from eyes and trail down my cheeks as I begin to sob loudly. Whoever was holding me back from before has loosened their grip and I've slowly made my way to the floor, kneeling down, and my head in my hands whilst I cry over losing the love of my life.
