Walking down the empty street, you inhale the warm, sweet smelling air, appreciating it before having to go inside. Strolling up the porch steps, you knock on the door of the house you’ve been invited round to. Calum opens the door, sporting a large smile upon seeing you, crinkles forming at the corners of his deep brown eyes.
“Hey there, stranger.” He greets you, pulling you into a warm hug. Every time this happens, you always hope for something more but you know that’s not how it’s going to happen.
“Hi.” You maintain an uplifting tone of voice, not wanting him to think there is something wrong and that you’re upset, because then you’d need to tell him how you feel about him and you’re not ready for that.
“So, I have movies and food. Sound good to you?” He calls, walking off into the house leaving you standing there.
“Yeah, sounds brilliant.” You remove your shoes and make your way to the living room where you will no doubt be spending the afternoon. You see a pile of comedy films on the centre table, causing you to smile at how well Calum knows you and what type of films you enjoy. Horror films being ruled out immediately.
“Here.” You turn around to see Calum, his arm stretched out in front of him with a bottle of water in his hand and it being offered to you. You take it from his hand muttering a small thank you, before turning back around to the DVDs to choose which to watch first.
“How about we watch 21 Jump Street first? It’s funny as hell and I know you love it.” You say to him. You can hear him sitting down on the sofa but he doesn’t reply. You turn around and see him smiling apologetically at you, thinking he’s going to rearrange your day together, you wait for him to speak.
“Actually, I said Tania could choose the first film.”
“Tania?” You ask, confusion covering your face at the unknown party that’s attending your one on one time with Calum.
“Yeah. She’s this girl I’ve been seeing. She’s really nice and funny, you’d like her.”
“Oh, OK.” You nod your head, albeit reluctantly. You can’t help but think, if she’s so nice and funny and that you’d like her, why wouldn’t Calum like you if he likes her? Though the idea seems ridiculous now, seeing as he’s with someone and it’s ruined whatever chance you thought you may have had.
“She should be here any minute actually.” He says excitedly, he seems so happy and you want to blurt out your feelings for him but you don’t want to ruin that happiness that he has.
Calum lets in Tania, the girl who is everything you’re not. She’s the complete opposite to you. Stuck up, obnoxious, ditzy and careless and you can’t seem to fathom why Calum is so interested in her. You stay the afternoon, waiting out it for Calum’s sake, knowing that it would hurt his feelings if you left and didn’t at least attempt to get to know his new girlfriend. So you stay there, listening to the giggling talks exchanged between the pair of them and just wishing that was you instead of her, because you could make him happier. You’re just too scared to tell him.
