Your POV

You sat there. The cold wind making your hair whip out around your face, drying the endless stream of hot tears that are racing down your cheeks. You’ve been sat here, on the piers edge, looking out onto the horizon for the better part of a few hours. Not waiting for anything in particular, just for the pain to stop. You hear a heavy pair of footsteps on the wooden flooring behind you, feeling alert, you straighten up in your position to not seem as vulnerable. Even though the puffy eyes seem to be an instant give away.

“Thought you’d be here.”

You automatically relax at those words. Not necessarily at the words, but who the words are coming from. His soft, calm voice easing you and you know who it is without having to look up.

“Hi Ashton.”

You smile slightly at his presence. He’s always been good at giving advice, cheering you up and being supportive, something you crave for right now.

“Want to tell me what happened?”

You glance at him, his eyes scanning your face with an intense and worried look. He always looked so effortlessly beautiful and you had to struggle to stop yourself from smiling at him like an idiot.

“Arguing with my mum. Again.” You huff out a breath in exasperation. It seemed petty crying over this, knowing people had real problems but you couldn’t help but feel sorry for yourself for a little while.

“Ahh, my lovely mother-in-law.”

You roll your eyes and giggle at his comment, knowing he’s not being serious with the reference. He nudges you with his elbow, his stunning hazel eyes alight with humour, knowing he has succeeded in cheering you up after only a couple of sentences.

“She’s not your mother-in law, Ash.”

“I meant future mother-in-law. We’re best friends, it’s bound to happen. It’s inevitable.”

He wiggles his eyebrows up and down suggestively, resulting in you crying with laughter instead of with sadness. Something he lightly joins in with. You know he’s joking, this is usually the humorous path he goes down when you’re sad and need cheering up. Little did he know that, a joke for him, was a reality you felt your heart burning for.

“Obviously.” You mutter to yourself, thinking it was barely audible and that he didn’t hear you.

“What do you mean?”

Your head practically snaps up to look at him, his curious eyes staring at your face waiting for a response from you. You feel your throat dry and your face redden, the icy cold sea water below has never looked so inviting until this very moment when you crave to propel yourself from the low pier edge into the water below, just to save yourself from embarrassment.

“I just mean, obviously it will happen, look at me and look at you. We’d make beautiful children. It would be a crime not to.”

You cheekily smile at him to lighten the mood. He doesn’t react as quickly as you was expecting him to, to your joke; his facial expression showing how he was thinking about what you said, causing a flicker of hope to ignite within you.

“I’m glad you agree.”

He smiles and winks at you, his cheeky personality shining through but not being as convincing as it was before. Something you pick out on but don’t call him up on it. After all, Ashton is your best friend. The only boy you’ve ever loved and trusted with all of your heart. Yet, actually saying those words to him, caused you to doubt everything about your friendship with him not knowing how he would react and you couldn’t lose him.
