The light orange glow on the horizon was slowly setting as you walked along the boardwalk with your boyfriend Ashton. Hands intertwined, you both spoke random thoughts that you had kept inside throughout the day, things that you wish to only share with each other.

“If a squirrel and a turtle had a baby, what would it be called?” He asks you completely serious, almost like he was pondering the meaning of life and not what a baby turtle/squirrel would be called. You chuckle lightly, looking over at Ashton who has a small smile on his face and his eyes are flickering between looking at your face and at the floor beneath you.

“Most definitely a squirtle. Don’t you think?” You answer his question with a straight face, the pair of you entertaining yourself with random conversations that others would find strange, but you find it amusing.

You both laugh as you approach the sand, both of you taking your shoes off and carrying them in your hands so you don’t get them filled with sand. The grains go in between your toes, causing you to wriggle them to get it out, only for more to fall in place. Your conversations flow from squirtles to ligers, to travelling the world and what the best flavour Smartie is, you’re rooting for blue but he claims orange. He’s now sat on the sand, his legs open and knees bent for you to sit in between them as you both watch the sun set together.

“We should get one of those.” He remarks, confusing you in the midst of your Smarties debate.

“A blue and orange Smartie?” You question, your brows furrowing as he laughs out loud at the thought.

“No, a squirtle.” All serious and confident that it’s possible, causing you to erupt into fits of laughter.

“There’s no such thing!” You exclaim in between gasps for air, your hands clutching your stomach as he lightly chuckles in your ear. “A squirtle! Like a squirrel and a turtle could mate and produce offspring.”

You continue laughing, not realising that Ashton has gotten up off the sand behind you, your laughter begins to stop when he’s towering over you, eyes narrowed as if offended at your making fun of him.

“For that, were going to get one now.”

“And how is that going to happen?” You ask him in disbelief, not believing that he still thinks they exist.

Without uttering another word, he grabs you by your hand and pulls you up to stand next to him. Before you can ask him again, he bends down and picks you up, his arms behind your knees as he swings you over his shoulder and you begin to scream.

“Ashton! Put me down!”

“No!” He starts running and, due to you only being able to see the sand, you can’t see where he is heading. But you can’t think it a good idea when the sound of the night waves become louder.

“I swear, Ash, if you’re heading towards that water I’ll,” Your words are cut off by him submerging the pair of you in the salty water. You come up spluttering, and see him floating next to you with a proud smile on his face, his hair wet and sticking to his head. “You’re dead.” Your voice determined as you finish what you was going to say to him.

You lunge at him and dunk him under the water. Letting him up, an evil smile grows on his face as he splashes water at you. You flick a wave full back in his direction, neither of you willing to give in. Even if having a water fight, in the sea, at night isn’t one of your best ideas. But it’s definitely the most fun.
