Pick your boy
I snuck in through her bedroom window, the room only lit by a dim, bedside lamp and she's sat on the bed with her knees to her chest.
"Babe?"
I barely get another word out before I hear obnoxious yelling from another room, screams and yells filling the night air and causing her to shake in fear.
"They won't stop," she sobs, leaning her head further into her knees as I scramble onto the bed beside her and pull her into my side to protect her and care for her, "I've just been sat here and waiting - just hoping they would shut up."
Her body visibly shakes in my arms, and I kiss her head and hold her tighter. It's not fair. No one should have to hear their parents fight and argue, words like knives cutting at you and causing you to fall down and become shattered glass in an empty home.
The yelling never ceases. It grows louder and larger, even the crying of the fragile girl next to me doesn't cover any of the sounds.
"They haven't been happy in so long," she whimpers into the quiet room, the noises on the outside still amplified as we lay down with each other, "I don't know when they stopped being happy, but I feel so alone now."
"You're not alone, I promise," I mumble back to her, holding her even closer into my body and whispering quiet reassurances to her.
We both lay there in the silence of each other, not bothering to block out the arguments of her parents or the smashing of plates. The sound of the pain and the blame, all of the battles and the wars they seem to be fighting in the living room whilst we wait for it all to end. But we don't know when it will.
"Thank you," I feel her speak against my neck, the sound startling me as I assumed she was asleep.
"What for?"
"Being here for me, I needed you," she nuzzles her face into my neck and I stroke her back to comfort her more. I will always be here for her.
"Always. Whenever you need me, you know I'll be here."
It's a big promise, but it's one I know I can keep. She won't be all alone in this Broken Home. I won't let her.
